Jamieson 2P 4-4-0

Postby Knuckles » Sat May 07, 2022 12:01 pm

Greetings.

So I brought an ancient Jamieson 2P 4-4-0 kit because I fancy a hard challenge and to build a bit of history, experience kit building with all its difficulties before slots, tabs, folds and everything else we're used to emerged from the depths of successive developments.

But, no instructions in the box.

Help please if can.

I'm unlikely to figure it all out without them.
Having inspected all the parts quite a few bits are obvious but some not so much. Will be a challenge either way.

I found this blog with a few pages that's very helpful as to the construction of it, asked for instructions in a comment also, y'never know.

Seek, and ye shall find!

Had an idea I had a Jamieson 2P kit lurking in the attic and so it proved. The attached .pdf of the instructions is the best I can do, bearing in mind that I had to scan foolscap sheets to an A4 scanner bed, which just goes to show how old this kit is. Final sentence on the first page got truncated and should read "Cab handrails are fitted in a similar manner."

I note that the kit was apparently designed with a view to its mounting on a Tri-ang L1 chassis. I don't know how accurate were the base dimensions of that chassis, but I think there is a 6" discrepancy between the prototype L1's coupled wheelbase (10' 0") and that of the 2P (9' 6"), so it would be as well to check carefully for departures on the Jamieson kit from the correct dimensions of the prototype as scaled down. That might be particularly significant as regards the layout of the kit so far as firebox cutouts for the splashers are concerned, and I guess that illustrations F to G in the instructions represent modifications required to fit the upperworks to the Tri-ang chassis that you may well be able to disregard.

I was interested to note that the principal components consist of a number of punchings from nickel silver sheet, suitably formed to something approaching the components' finished shape. On my kit some of the punchings are only partial, leaving the punching to be separated from the surrounding metal, and in many cases creating a protruding shoulder around the punched aperture that will need smoothing and/or re-profiling.

At its front end the radius of the the corner between the cab roof and sidesheets looks pretty good (haven't checked its accuracy against any drawing), but the nature of manufacture is such that the cutout in the cab sidesheets is not, as it should be, radiused into the cab roof - a bit of gentle peening over a suitable rod former might well improve matters. This problem with the cab is accentuated by the fact that the spectacle plate punching has sharply angled corners between side and top edges and thus doesn't follow the radiused bend that has been applied to the sidesheets-roof component. Top spectacles are also going to need some attention, and you'll probably want to form spectacle frames around all the apertures.

If the parts are of reasonable dimensional accuracy, this kit seems to have the potential to be built into a very pleasing model that will eliminate quite a bit of the basic work of component cutting and forming that would be required for a scratchbuild. I'd love to find the time to get my own Jamieson kits under way, but for now they are some way down my list of priorities. I look forward to further posts showing how you get on with yours.

Thank you so much! :thumb :thumb

Really appreciate this. I've just printed them off on paper so happy days indeed!

There's quite a few drawings nocking around the 'net luckily such as this one;

so no problems there. Will amass some pictures and see where we go from there.
I'm going to build my 4th 3500 Gallon tender from Comet 1st as I need 5 (5th can do later) as yet a bit more practice then will start the 2P.
Should be an interesting challenge to say the least!
