Plodding on with my 'Barnum' and looking through Russell to check cab details, I noticed on the Dean Goods and a few others, there is a curved rib under the cab roof extending from the ends of the cab valance supporting the roof. I haven't yet found a cab photo of a Barnum but I am guessing this was a standard feature of GWR cab roofs of this era?

If you are building the Mallard kit than that part is catered for in the kit. However, be aware that some early Dean era Barnums (with BRO boilers) had 3 arc roofs; not included in the kit. Also the whistles were sometimes on the firebox and sometimes on the roof.

Thanks so much for those images guys, and answering the query about the cab roof structure. I am finishing a Mallard kit started years ago by a late friend, who gave up on it because of the lack of decent motor/gear combos. Happily Mr Gibbon has resolved that issue and the project is coming to a conclusion, then I've got my own kit to build!

I got a milled chassis from Alan Gibson Workshop for mine. Worked a treat with a High Level gearbox. I also used the High Level Dean tender chassis.

That's very useful to know, thank you Peter. The Mallard kit has many faults in the light of present day offerings, but 'back in the day' they were the bees-knees. The chassis design is pretty awful, but then they probably didn't consider springing or compensation! and it seemed perfectly acceptable to have a big lump of X04 motor occupying the cab. When I've recovered from this adventure I shall look at the Gibson chassis and certainly the HL Dean tender, (I'd forgotten about that! ) anything to make life easy!
