Postby Paul Townsend » Sat Dec 11, 2021 6:21 am

I need a favour.
Do you have a copy of the S4Society re-issued book of Loco wheel Specs originally by Mike Sharman?

Please PM me if you have a copy and could look up one loco for me.

I can't find my copy

"Wheel Specifications for the Modeller" is advertised as available from the (e)stores.
The Sharman list was, I believe, updated by a former committee deputy chair (Richard) sometime after 2010 and I advised on a very small number of pre-grouping wheels.

What I am not clear about is whether this advertised book is the original or the one revised by the aforesaid committee member.

Mike Sharman's original has been out of print for decades.
That together with more info becoming available incentivised our Committee to produce the new edition.
I am sure the latter is what Stores sell.

From our publications page https://www.scalefour.org/publications/sharmanwheels
This revised edition has been updated, and, in the few places where errors were detected in the original, corrected.

Your opinion of the original will depend on your regional preference. I found several errors in the LNER/NER section so mine is buried deep under a large pile somewhere. On the other hand if it was more successful in your own region you'll think it a valuable reference.

In practice you rarely get a choice of wheel for a model but manufacturers did use it and we live with the results.
