Brassmasters Precursor

Postby MPR » Fri Mar 19, 2021 1:31 pm

I seem to have acquired an unbuilt Brassmasters Precursor, which may enjoy running powers on Torre, despite having no business whatsoever being there!
As it is very much a side-project, I don’t plan to swap out the chassis or go for CSBs etc, but I was wondering what wheels would be recommended these days (I don’t think that Sharmans are a possibility any more)
Does anyone have advice or recommendations for assembling one of these?
I’m think of building it as “Sirocco” in final condition.
Regards
Martin

Martin,

I built one several years ago but it was somewhat modified with some special etched parts. A look at the early parts of this thread on RMweb will give some idea. The Brassmasters Precursor Tank I built has the chassis largely as supplied has a rigid rear driving axle, the front axle is pivoted and the bogie is compensated as per the kit design. The Precursor chassis is near identical and should run well.

The P4 6' 9" 20 spoke Sharman Wheels are no longer available. Alan Gibson Workshop does the nearest at 6' 8" 20 spoke.

Do you have the Whale tender conversion kit to convert the Bowen Cooke version? I think Sirocco would have the earlier tender but I would hav e to check.

Phoenix Paints have recently reintroduced the Sharman wheel range.

Thanks for the advice- the suspension scheme you suggest sounds sensible for this application, also the AGW wheel recommendation. I don’t have the Whale conversion kit though - I’ll look into this further.

Thanks Gordon - I followed the link, but it appears that this wheel type is out of stock and that there are no plans to produce further parts.

There are a couple of images of Sirocco in “FourCoupled Twilight Part 1” by Patrick Whitehouse & David Jenkinson - the tender is described as the Bowen Cooke type, so I think I should be ok to proceed.
