Axle diameters for Mitchell and Finney 4mm Loco kits

Postby bordercollie » Sun Dec 06, 2020 2:43 am

Hi

I am away from home and need to determine the axle diameters to be used on Mitchell and Finney loco kits. I think it is 1/8". Can anybody confirm this?

Best wishes

I can confirm the kits I have from Finney are all 1/8th.

The kit manufacturers "follow" what the wheel manufacturers supply. 1/8" for steam loco driving axles and 2.0mm for bogie/tender wheels is the norm, although Sharman (and others?) did 3/32" bogie/tender wheels initially (many years ago).

Yes, Ultrascale tried 3/32" as well in the early days for Southern tender wheels. They didn't continue with that particular diameter.
That would be an ecumenical matter.
