Wheel Press and Quartering Tools.

Hello,

My experience in P4 conversions to date is entirely with diesel and electric locos, and lots of rolling stock, so quite experienced with MJT and Brassmasters, and latterly Penbits (sample of one so far!). Its about time to bite the bullet and get going on some steam engines, and I have some Brassmasters Easichas kits waiting in the wings, with AG wheels.

So my first question for ten, is there a recommended wheel press/ quartering tool please? I would prefer something foolproof (!), and certainly reliable. To date I have had no issues assembling diesel and coach wheels on their axles, but don't really want to use the hand pressure for steam loco wheels. Any advice appreciated.

PBM.

Mike Ainsworth covered wheel mounting on page 20 of Scalefour News 198 which you can find in the Scalefour News Archive if you haven't got it.
The GW Models wheel press and quartering jig is worth getting.
George doesn't have a web site but here are the ordering details taken from the latest MRJ

The GW Models jigs a good tool of this job but if you are using it for an Easichas with AGW wheels these may be 3mm axles rather than the standard 1/8" axles catered for in the "standard" wheel press. If you call George he will be able to advise the price of the additional parts - I think they were £5 a set when I bought mine. They do make RTR conversions using 3mm axles somewhat easier...

Mike's S4N article, referred to by Steve, is a good one to look out to help with this stage of construction.

Hello, all. I'm going to appear extremely stupid, but I have a GW wheel press and simply cannot work out how to use it, except that it goes in a vice.
Does anyone have written instructions that they could post, or offer a few photos on its use.
Thanks in advance,
Geoff

You may find this description of using a GW press in practice useful too.

And you don’t really need a vice…

I’ve always hand-pressed on wheels using my GW press. I find that I have enough control, and the wheels I’ve used (Gibson, Sharman, Ultrascale) have never needed forcing.

All the best, and do follow Will’s excellent instructions.

Best
Paul
