Instructions for M Mitchell/David Geen 45/55xx kit

Postby johndarch » Sat Oct 24, 2020 9:28 am

I am missing a few pages of the detailed instructions. Mine start at 4 and finish at 19. If anyone has a full set, I would be grateful for a copy of the missing pages.

I have a set from the Churchward/Modelex 44/45xx, but the page numbers seem to be different.

Reminds me that JLTRL models took over the MM range.

A certain person rang a number, spoke to Pete Waterman - who very kindly let him have copies of the 7mm instructions.

People in the music industry have been known to pretend to be interested in models - but get the phone put down when their real intent becomes known!

Thanks Tim, it's not just the page numbers that are different, so are some of the etches! Are there any written instructions with The Churchward kit?

John,

I have a kit for a Mitchell Design 4575/55XX class, bought on ebay and unfortunately not quite complete. There is a set of A5 instructions, with pages numbered 2 to 20, that appear to be an nth generation photocopy. However I'm not sure they are the correct set as the diagrams and prototype notes are for the 44XX class !

To check against your instructions, mine contain the following :-
Page 4 is headed 'SUPERSTRUCTURE' and 'LIST OF PARTS'.
The top of page 6 consists of an advert for Guy Williams book.
Page 19 ends ' The same goes for the rear vertical'

Pages 2 and 3 contain lists of etched chassis components and other chassis fittings. From the content, page 20 appears to be the final page.

I'm happy to send scans of the extra pages if they would help.

Mark

Thanks Noel. Sadly the instructions for the 44/55xx are far from complete.

Beware - some instructions for the 517 are mixed in with the 44/45/55xx.

Mark. If you can let me have scans of pages 2,3 & 20 that would be great. Many thanks. I've just checked my page 19, it finishes 'a small recess to take the bunker rear (13 and 14) which should now be soldered into' so perhaps I need your Page 18 as well. There seem to be a lot of versions!

I have received a complete set of pages from Mark. Thanks Mark. Strangely he has a totally different Page 19 to me, so I have let him have a copy of mine. I wonder just how many versions of the instructions there are!!

Hi Mark, it's me again.

I had not picked upon the fact that the part numbering on some of my drawings don't tie up with those used in the instructions. I have sorted them all out apart from those that relate to the brake operating assembly as there are no drawings for the assembly apart from an unhelpful sketch in the text. Foolishly I only copied the text pages you sent me, not the photos of the sheets of etches.

I wonder, do parts 45 and 51 in the instructions relate to parts 20 and 21 on the etches sheet. Part 56 doesn't seem to bear any relationship to the remaining unallocated parts 23 and 24 on the etches sheet.

There doesn't appear to be a part to connect the rear of the pull rod to the brake shaft lever as it's too long for anything on the etch. Perhaps it needs to be formed from brass wire.

There are also six parts numbered 60 and 61 on the etches sheet that I cannot find a home for.

The two sheets in question are attached below

John,

The diagrams you've attached appear to be for 7mm scale. I guess the part numbers differ between the two scales. I'll send scans of my diagrams.

I don't appear to have another diagram for the brakegear.

Unfortunately MM has used the same part numbers on the chassis and superstructure !

Scans have arrived safely. You have a completely different set of etches to mine! However they do answer all my questions. I have some surplus parts that are only for 7mm and I will have to fabricate some parts to complete the brake gear. Fortunately, I do have the GA's to work from.

Thanks again.

John
