16" Std Bagnall 0-6-0 industrial tank

Postby steamraiser » Thu Jul 25, 2019 2:05 pm

As the Impetus kit range is no longer available I have been researching and cogitating about producing a kit for the Bagnall 16" x 24" cylinder 0-6-0 saddle tank.
See the picture below which I have borrowed from Roys Rail Page. (http://roysrailpage.000webhostapp.com/) Unfortunately I could not find his full name on the web.

My research has identified that eighteen of these beasts were built between 1942 and 1955 initial being sent to Preston Docks and a variety of collieries.
16" x 24" Bagnall 0-6-0 saddle tank.
Build number Name Destination Date despatched
1 2680 No 4 Birchwood Coal and Coke 12/1942
2 2681 William Sneyd Collieries 12/1942
3 2682 Princess Preston Docks 02/1942
4 2818 No 17 Norton & Biddulph Collieries 08/1945
5 2838 Energy Preston Docks 6-7/1946
6 2839 Perseverance Preston Docks 6-7/1946
7 2840 Enterprise Preston Docks 6-7/1946
8 2891 Process Preston Docks 11-12/1948
9 2892 Courageous Preston Docks 11-12/1948
10 2893 Conqueror Preston Docks 11-12/1948
11 2991 No 1 Florence Colliery 09/1950
12 2992 No 3 NCB Deep Pit Unit. 08/1950
13 3059 Florence No 2 Florence Colliery 01/1954
14 3060 Sneyd No 4 Sneyd Colliery 02/1954
15 3061 NCB No 6 Rawden Colliery 10/1954
16 3075 Berry Hill No 4 Berry Hill Colliery 11/1954
17 3077 Hem Heath No 1 Florrence Colliery 6-7/1955
18 3078 Hem Heath No 2 Hem Heath Colliery 6-7/1955

I would be interested in any further information etc people have of these class.

A small number have been preserved.

I have identified in excess of eighty drawings for this class that I think need looking at.

So before I start to commit time and money to further research how many people would be interested in a 00/EM/P4 kit for this Bagnall?

If you'd also consider one of these, I'd be in the market.....
That would be an ecumenical matter.

Gordon

Would the chassis be the same as the High Level Hawthorn Leslie 0-6-0? Might save a bit on time...design wise.

Thanks for the thought Mike.
I prefer to start from scratch using original information rather than complicate matters by using a chassis from a different locomotive and kit producer.

Gordon,

Put me down as interested please. I had an Impetus kit that was killed in a house move!

Oh Gordon, you're a very naughty boy. :D. I'll speak to you about that at RailWells.

Like Horsetan, I'd also go for one of the really big Bagnalls like Victor and Vulcan (I have a bit of a soft spot for these locos, as they were active on the WSR when I was volunteering on that railway in the very early days and I was the first fireman on Vulcan, when it was restored to service in 1977), but in fact, I think that the 16" standard Bagnall is a nicer-looking loco and potentially more useful in a generic or outrageously improbable industrial setting, given that there were more of them.

I think Mercian produced a kit for them in 7mm scale, but I never saw a 4mm version attempted.

Hi Gordon,

My Impetus 16" needs a strip down and general servicing. I used Sharnan wheels when I built it but I'm a little concerned that if I damage one of them when removing them I might have a problem replaving them. Does Gibbo do a suitable replacement?

Does anyone know news of Robin Arkinstall? I ask because presumably the artwork and masters for his kits might still exist and could form the basis for an upgraded range if he were willing to make them available and someone with the necessary skills could re-vamp them? They were excellent kits back in the day, I built two of his Manning Wardles and wished i'd bought more at the time.

Just a thought,

Steve

Steve the range was bought by Kalgarin Models, who as far as I know has no interest in selling 4mm kits, or reintroducing the range, or letting anyone else use the information to do so.
Hence my plan to start from scratch.

Sorry for the delay in answering the wheels question.
The wheels on Empress are shown as 3' 6.5" diameter.
I think I have counted the spokes as 11.

Looking at the Gibson wheels list Collin does a 3' 6" wheel 10 spoke 10" throw.

I have not visited the archives yet to confirm the wheel details.

Hi Gordon.

Coming in a bit late on this one. There is interest from me if this kit comes to fruition, to make a model of one of the Florence locos.

This was my "local" line growing up as I lived next to Longton Park and the line from Hem Heath/Trentham to Florence ran past the park.

This project will probably not kick off until next year.

Ok Gordon thanks. No rush at all.

It's not like there is nothing else in the queue waiting to be built.... John
