Wide-cab Drummond T9, non-superheated - allocations for last four

Postby essdee » Sun Mar 17, 2019 9:38 pm

Calling LSWR/SR specialists, please:

In my version of history, ca1924-5, a wide-cab Drummond T9 has found its way onto the S&DJR on an excursion... or else Branksome shed has been very naughty.

The last four wide-cabs remaining un-superheated at this period were 302,307,312,337. I thought I had a list of T9 allocations among my files, but seems not.

Please could a kind person tell me where the above four examples were shedded in period 1923-25? Oh yes, and my example would have to be towing a water-cart tender.....

Many thanks in anticipation,

Steve

Hi Steve,
Not a direct answer to your question on allocations, but from Bradley's Wild Swan book on the Drummond classes 302 was superheated in 6/1923, 307 in 8/1924, 312 in 2/1925 and 337 in 5/1925.

307 was paired with a 3500 gallon 6 wheel tender for working on the Eastern section in 7/1925 and 312 was likewise paired with a 3500 gallon tender in 1/1925. They were both transferred to Battersea shed.

I don't know which livery you were thinking of, but the dates for repainting into Southern livery were 302 11/1925, 307 8/1924, 312 2/1925 and 337 5/1925. In other words, for your scenario, each would have been in LSWR livery.

Regards
Ian

You've probably looked at this already, but http://www.semgonline.com/steam/t9class_dat.html gives some sparse data both on tender pairings and allocations.

307 and 312 are given as Stewarts Lane allocations in June 1924. First allocations given for the other two are August 1937: 302 at Eastleigh and 337 at Fratton.

http://www.semgonline.com/shed_allocations/shed-alloc.html also has spreadsheets on LSWR and SR allocations which yield some additional data. They hint at 307 and 312 being long-term residents of South London and in 1932 put 302 at Eastleigh and 337 at Fratton.

On the strength of this your best bet may be to concentrate on 302 and 337 as the most likely candidates.

Ian,

Many thanks for that, confirmation of the 8wh tenders in my chosen period is good to know! As is confirmation of the engines retaining LSWR livery - something which I had hoped for.

May I check one of the superheating dates, though, please? I have noted down (blush, can't remember the website...) these for the whole class, which enabled my initial selection of numbers.
However, for 302, I have written down June 1924, not 1923 as Bradley apparently has it. This is quite likely to be 11pm brain fade on my part, but if the earlier date does indeed apply, then 302 becomes less attractive..... many thanks again.

John,
Yes thanks, that was a very useful find, in giving me a spread of allocations for the chosen locos.

So, it looks like 337, with 302 as 'standby engine', reaching S&D from wherever.... I may have to be assertive with my re-interpretation of history!

Thanks both, very helpful,

Steve

Steve,
I am a bit puzzled by the tables in Bradley's book, but for what it is worth my reading on the dates (page 43) is as follows:-

302 Eastleigh superheater 6/1923, Maunsell superheater 11/1925, Southern Livery 11/1925
307 Eastleigh superheater 8/1924, Maunsell superheater 7/1925, Southern Livery 8/1924
312 Maunsell superheater 2/1925, Southern Livery 2/1925
337 Maunsell superheater 5/1925, Southern Livery 5/1925

It does look as though 337 is your best bet.

Ian,

Thanks very much for posting the extracted data from Bradley's book, much appreciated.

Now for the hunt for images of 337...

Cheers,

Steve
