MR 4F Tender [type C] 3,500 gallon

Postby RAO » Mon Feb 04, 2019 12:51 pm

Can anyone advise who produces the MR Type C 3,500 gallon tender. Basically no beading but with snap head rivets. (type C is referred to LMS Locomotive Profiles No. 10 The Standard Class 4 Goods 0-6-0s)

Brassmasters
That would be an ecumenical matter.

Thank you for your reply. However these are the high sided tenders. I'm looking for the roll top tenders [see attached photo].

Hi,
I have a kit for one of these, it came from Colin Seymore at Alan Gibson. I need the kit for a 4f too, but Colin may have some more etches.
regards, Tony.

There was also one by Connoisseurs Choice, though while a lot of that range is available from London Road Models the 3500g tender doesn't appear to have made it across.

John Redrup may know about it though, or this may at least give a second avenue to keep an eye out for...

It is a gap in the current market, as some of the underframes were also rebuilt with Fowler bodies (which were shorter, so identifiable by the lip at the rear end) and sat behind the likes of Crabs and 7Fs in this form.

Many years ago I obtained a Gibson 3500 gallon tender kit having the appearance of the one shown in your photograph, intending to combine it with a 4F kit from the same source to represent one of the S&D's Armstrongs - but still haven't got round to building it! I am assuming your intention too is to represent one of the Armstrong batch.

If you have Bradley and Milton's book on S&D locomotives you will probably be all too well aware of the complexities of Armstrong engine and tender pairings, but it always seemed to me that the Gibson kit should be capable of producing a good representation of the tenders in the form as delivered by the builders.

You may also be aware that Armstrongs' tenders of the type shown in your photograph apparently carried tank fillers in each of the back corners of the tank top. Fillers in the corner position are observably present on 44557, 44559 and 44560 in the mid-1950's. Given this 'spread' of the configuration across the Armstrong engines, I assume it was a feature of all five engines in the batch, but have never seen documentation (as distinct from photographs) to confirm this. The arrangement can be seen on pages 82-3 in Vol. 1 of 'An Illustrated Review of Midland Locomotives', albeit for panelled varieties of this tender.

Thank you all for these replies.

The locomotive that I wish to model is 44557 [ex S&D 57]. The period being 1956-7.
In 4th August 1956 she was running still with the original tender, however the next photo I have 5th October 1957 her tender had changed to a high sided type [both photos from Ivo Peters S&D in the Fifties Volume Two]. So I might even build two tenders for her!

I will speak to Colin at Alan Gibson as see what her might still have.

Ambis do an etch which covers 4 types of Johnson 3,500 gallon sides and ends.

I've looked them up but it doesn't looked like the one I'm looking at has snap head rivets.

But they do produce some interesting items.

Ambis do not do the style of tender that I am looking for.

Alan Gibson seems the only choice. I'll let you know how I get on.
