Having recently acquired a Hornby Caley 0F 'Pug' 0-4-0 as a freebie, I am wondering if anyone makes a kit for a scale chassis? Seems like a nice little shunting loco crying out for some added detail, a High Level gearset and a decent set of boots! Its been around in the Hornby range for ever but I don't think I've ever seen one in P4.

High Level do a fully detailed chassis kit. Robin Whittle’s article in MRJ166 covers the construction and detail variations.

I think Jeremy is thinking of the Dapol L&Y Pug, for which High Level do/did a chassis incorporating the missing cab detail. I have one here somewhere waiting to be built for a friend. The Hornby Caley Pug is a different model, as per Mark’s post, having been in the range, as Steve says, for ages. It is very much more basic than the Dapol one, which actually was correct in outline and detail.

I have a vague feeling that Hornby now produce the Dapol one, but that might be completely wrong!

Many thanks chaps, it appears Branchlines do the biz. I clearly didn't look hard enough!

The High Level L & Y Pug chassis is a joy to build, I have two and they run beautifully. I shall probably get the basic Caley chassis from Branchlines and put the 108:1 HL gear set in as they are so well engineered.

A note of caution here. I wanted one of these locos for Middlepeak some years back and found the Hornby model to be somewhat wanting in certain critical dimensions - so much so that I ended up scratch building the whole loco.

I can't remember off hand what the precise issues were and I'm away from home at the moment so can't check my model, but it might be worth doing a little homework before you take the plunge!

Has anyone tried the Branchlines chassis? I have an Anchoridge kit of this to make some day. The only example I know of was that Mike Gilgannon made (as always with him) a superb model of the loco plus tender wagon, but using what, he is unfortunately not around to tell us.

The Anchoridge (now Falcon Brass) kit for this can make up into a nice wee model. I think this was the basis for Mike's model..... but he could make a silk purse out of a pig's ear! Jim Summers also made one from this kit, which looks and runs as well as you'd expect. I had to send back some or the parts from my kit because they were out of registration -- I did get replacements. It appears on the Falcon Brass website, but I'm not sure of the current supply situation.

Well Allan that gives me optimism the Anchoridge chassis might work for me. A long time off at current rate of progress. I must say with the Hornby model I wondered whether Chris HI Level might be interested in making a chassis kit. It could be a quite interesting new level of intricacy if it had the motor in the tender...and could be used under a decent brass kit or the Hornby body, suitably doctored as per the link a few posts above.

I recall seeing Mike's model in bare metal at a West Group meet (1980s?), and I remember it being primarily nickel silver?

Steve my kit etches are still in what looks like the original tissue paper. No point in disturbing them but bits of edge poke through and mostly seem to be brass. However I unwrapped the chassis etch - which is in NS. Here it is -

And the fulsome second of two and a half pages of detail instructions! Still, a certificate assures me I am the proud owner of No 96 of 150 kits produced!
