Samhongsa GWR Pannier - conversion to P4/S4

Postby newport_rod » Sat Mar 25, 2017 9:14 am

Prompted by a member of NAGNAG I exhumed from my attic a Samhongsa GWR OO Pannier, which I bought in 1981 for the huge sum of £69 thinking that it would appreciate and I would be able to spent my retirement in clover. However, since the real value of the little beasties is less now then when I bought it and that it is still a reasonable model I'm considering the possibility of converting it to S4. Has anybody had any experience of converting them to P4/S4 and be able to pass on any tips?

I have Samhongsa 97XX it has sprung wheelsets I just wonder if the existing frames can be widened for P4 as I think it is screwed together.

David, i've looked at mine and the spacers are soldered to the frames but it wouldn't in itself be an insurmountable task to replace them with wider ones of course.

As it's sprung, and assuming axle sizes are something 'normal' I would be inclined to leave the chassis alone, and simply cosmetically widen it as is often done with a modern RTR job. Possibly the brake gear could be unsoldered and fitted to new spacers.
