Etched shorting strips for wheels on split axle chassis etc.

Postby Ian Everett » Thu Nov 03, 2016 10:04 am

Bill Bedford used to do shorting strips in etched brass but they seem no longer to be available on ther Eileen's Emporium web site.

I'm sure there was an alternative manufacturer but I cannot remember who.

Can anyone point me to an equivalent, please?

I believe some have used fuse wire. Can anyone comment on how to do it and how effective it is?

Thank you,

Ian

Make Worcestershire great again.
Build a wall along the Herefordshire border and make them pay for it.

Very useful nonsense!

Do you remember what type of wire you used? I'm thinking of either .33mm brass or 5 amp fuse wire.

Ian,

This is how Tim Venton fits shorting strips (from his workbench thread) viewtopic.php?f=105&t=913&start=25#p5722. There was some recent discussion on Paul Willis' workbench regarding the problem he had getting satisfactory back to back gauge when he did not rebate them into the wheel tread, as Tim does.

If you have any problems, or need further explanation or assistance, give me a ring.

For anyone reading this is the future, the stores stock Bill Bedford ones but are currently out of stock.

regards

Ian, I use fuse wire. It's pliable enough to prevent snapping.

I bunged in an order to the EMGS for some a couple of days ago, just to see what they're like.

I've had the acknowledgement of the order being packed, so hopefully I'll be able to report back in a day or two.

I found them an improvement on the BB ones, they have little fingers which contact the axle better.
