Can anyone tell me the driving axle diameter. (I wish to convert to P4 whilst using as much of the original mechanics as possible)

I can't help with the diameter but if reports are to be believed it seems quite a bizzare set up. The 2 driving axles are both gear driven and allowed plenty of sideways movement to cope with curves. This is apparently necessary as the bogie is just pivoted and can't move sideways at all. If this is the case I suspect a simple whel swap might not work all that well.

If it the same as their Beattie Well Tank the wheels will be mounted on half axles inserted into a central insulating muff on which is mounted (or moulded) the gear. As Jim says this makes it far from straightforward to change the wheels; on the Well Tank I believe the stub axles were an odd (3.6mm?) size.

If the gear is moulded on the muff then using new axles and wheels is not going to be easy as cutting off the gear and drilling it centrally for the new axle is going to be next to impossible. Ultrascale did a Well Tank for a customer by turning off the existing tyres and fitting new ones, and I can't believe that was a cheap job. If you are proficient with a lathe and have a collet chuck (or can make one) for the stub axle diameter that would be one way to go, but not for the faint hearted!

As I said in an earlier post about the Stirling Single, some manufacturers just make it difficult...

Oh it also picks up from the bogie.

So all in all, a good candidate for a replacement frame? ;)

Cheers,

That does look very complicated to P4.

Oh well, another route will be required. I imagine Hatton's 14xx will be a similar...

Kind regards,

Nick

At least there's already a high level chassis for the 14xx
