Re: class 15xx pannier tank (with a bit of 97xx thrown in)
News has just reached me that Warren Shephard is considering a very limited run of 4mm scale etch packs (which might extend to full kits) for the Hawksworth 15xx, based on a reduction of his 7mm kit.
Needs at least 24 people to make it a go, at an expected price of £80 per etch pack (more if it turns into a full kit, obviously).

Ooh handy. Would save me designing my own chassis

Potentially useful to the industrialists amongst us too. Having a foot in both camps (ie industrials and BR (W) I too could be tempted but I already have to many kits to be able to complete in my lifetime!

Latest from Warren Shephard reads as follows;
"Progress to date, I have redrawn the artwork for 4mm to give 00 and EM scales. The frames will be nickel silver and the bodies brass.
I hope to be able to get a lot of the castings rescaled to 4mm but need to check with the casters that scalding down the thickness will not be compromised.
Will keep you updated when I know more"
No P4 specific spacers, I note.
He certainly seems to be moving fast, although he might yet be delayed by the fact that the etchers are all non-operational due to Covid-19, etc.
If any of you are on Farcebook, you might want to join the game by signing up to the "GWR Modellers" Group, of which Warren is part. Not sure if the link will work, but here's one
Alternatively, see Warren's own website

Update on the Warren Shephard 15xx:
"...news on the 15xx from Warren Shephard is the etches are £60 a set and he is currently working on castings. He has asked that those of us who want a kit to paid a small deposit of £25. Please contact Warren to sort this with him asap"

Breaking news:
The magic 24 orders has been reached, so deposits of £25 by cheque are being called in now or by 22nd May at the very latest. Address can be obtained from Warren's website

Warren Shephard has now disclosed some of the artwork that he has tweaked for 4mm scale:
There's also the original instruction diagrams for the 7mm kit available if anyone is Interested.

Some minor tweaks to the motion, which now has some facility to be built reversible:

Wanna bet on how many actually get built?

Apparently as many as 26 of the 7mm kit were completed.
I think we'll be lucky if we reach double figures.
UPDATE: artwork going off to the etchers next week. Looks like there are some etch firms that are still working.

Just had a parcel in from Warren Shephard.... Looks like the kit's ready, then.

Fiddling with the Turner spreadsheet produced this initial plot. There is probably a better calculation out there....

Not necessarily, Alan's spread sheet does a perfectly good job. It looks OK to me, just make sure the fixed fulcrum points don't line up with anything vital on the chassis.Horsetan wrote:Fiddling with the Turner spreadsheet produced this initial plot. Not what I meant. What I was getting at is that some may achieve better balanced / more effective measurements out of the Turner spreadsheet.

I terms of balance it doubt it. It is true that are a number of solutions for any wheelbase. However used as intended Alan's spreadsheet (and mine) will give you a chassis that sits level and with the weight equally distributed across the wheelbase. I would have said they all have equal "balance".
It is true that Russ and I differ as where we would aim as to the overall CSB wire length, I would go for a shorter, thinner wire, Russ would go for a longer, thicker wire, but I know of no evidence that definitively supports either cause. There are limits of course, nothing should be taken too far, a good rule of thumb is that if you work out half the average distance between the wheels. The end fulcrums should not be further from the axle than that, and should not be closer than half that figure. You can find solutions outside those limits but the result become much sensitive to minor inaccuracies in the dimensions
The real value of having a series of possible, equal valid, solutions is that you can then find one that doesn't coincide with other features of the chassis, or in my case that they do coincide with reasonable chassis spacer locations which can then incorporate the fulcrum point.

Given that for a small class no 2 were the same and most weren’t the same as themselves when they were new it’s a bit of a minefield TBH.

I wonder what tipped Rapido into making that decision? Couldn't have been Warren's kit....could it?
