Hornby A3 variants (etc) RTR conversion question

Postby jon price » Thu Jul 07, 2011 9:13 pm

Hi, this is for any RTR conversion experts out there.

I'm currently "working on" a DJH Claughton, to be finshed (at some point in the future...) as the war memorial loco "Patriot". I found out that Langley do a whitemetal body for the LBSCR baltic tank, which of course means I want to do their war memorial loco "Remembrance" (there is a theme here). The Langley kit is advertised as requiring a Hornby A3 Chassis, or a Gibson frame set. The Gibson frame set would be nice, but I would then need rods, and more importantly all the valve gear, and I can't see that in any easily available form. The Hornby chassis is clearly the one now on sale in the "Railroad range" with presumably similar low accuracy valve gear. Brassworks are trailing a future conversion pack for the Hornby A3, but this is of course the new superdetail A3 which may well not fit the Langley body without extensive surgery.

So, what suggestions does anyone have for how to proceed?

Have a look at Comet Models, under locomotive chassis packs
They do a pack for the A3/A4
Should provide a good starting point,
I think you can get the valve gear separately

Hi

Thanks for that info. A good case of not seeing the obvious on my part, especially as not so long ago I got a Comet chassis pack to put under a Bachmann un-rebuilt Patriot body.
