Could someone please advise which paint colour the Great Western Railway applied to the INSIDE of their locomotive frames? Was it vermilion as per the Midland, or a different colour?
Many thanks,
Bruce Boldner.

Vermillion, according to John Lewis's Great Western Way (pub HMRS), also described as China Reda and Signel Red.

Newport Rod,
Many thanks for your confirmation that the GWR painted the inside of their locomotive frames red. I can now proceed to spray my 14XX Highlevel chassis in the correct colours.
Regards,
Bruce Boldner.

Bruce, only between smokebox and firebox.
I had a look at Guy Wiliams' book and he doesn't mention this point (he usually does, splasher tops black was his favourite remark).
Nothing is said about tender frames so I assume they should be black both sides.
The above only applies from 1906 onwards AAUI.
