Converting a Conversion...

Postby iak » Wed Sep 15, 2010 3:15 pm

I have a Bachmann Jinty at home with an Ultrascale conversion set.
It runs ok and such but I'm now thinking of sticking a proper chassis underneath - High Level or Bill Bedford...
Now the conversion set has 3mm axles so its find the axlebox time.
Apart from Exactoscale does anyone do 3mm axleboxes at all?
I could get some 2mm ones bored out but would rather buy some.....
Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated 8-)

If the conversion set wheels have the extended bosses moulded on the back then of course you'll have to remove those. If you want to return to 1/8" axles you could always ask David Rogers if he would re-mould the centres for you.

If you want to re-use the 3mm bore wheels, then (apart from skimming the rear boss off, as Philip notes) the choice is to either use the Exacto 3mm bore boxes or use 1/8" bore blocks with turned-down axles (the last requiring a lathe with a good collett).

As another possibility, you could use the 1/8" boxes with a turned insert to bring them down to 3 mm. A bit fussy perhaps but it might not need a collet.

You could, carefully, ream out the wheels to 1/8".......

Am I missing something here?

I don't see the problem with using Exactoscale 3mm bearings in these circumstances. Why is there a need to look for alternatives?

I was faced with a very similar situation - a set of Ultrascale wheels with 3mm axles originally intended for a Bachmann conversion, but which I then decided to use in a scale chassis on another model. So I bought a set of Exactoscale axleboxes with 3mm bearings. (I think I learned of their availability on this forum.)

There is just one minor problem; I quite distinctly asked for a 6-coupled set, and assumed that was what I had been handed on the Exactoscale stand at Railwells. It was only when I got home that I found I had been given a 4-coupled set. But I am sure this can be sorted out at Scaleforum.

I shall consider and ponder Gents.
I'm trying to keep this as simple as possible so I'm leaning towards putting Exactoscales in a High Level Chassis
Any other suggestions mind would be appreciated 8-)
Many Thanks

Bushing the gear on the High Level gearbox would still need to be done if using the 3mm axles..

Good point. I hadn't thought of that. It would apply equally whatever gearbox is used. I suppose one could devise some 3mm i/d bushes for the gearbox frame. I don't know whether these are also available commercially. (Can anyone tell us, please?)

Yup, already aware of this hence the train of thought.
I already have one for the other Jinty body - they will probably be built as a pair....
