Here is a picture of an upturned LNWR 18inch goods which shows how the axle just clears the slide bars and axle boxes etc.

Bringing this topic up to date I have now sorted out springs and removable leaf springs to allow the wheels to be removed. The leading axle plate will be screwed to the underside of the forward frame spacer and the rear is located on a spigot. The rear and central springs have been mounted on the ash pan sides which will be soldered to a removable plate screwed to two L sections soldered inside the frames. The outer parts of each spring are located on spigots again. Hopefully the pictures will make everything clear. The chassis at this stage is held together with frame spacers to allow me to test everything before soldering them together. The dots on the bearings identify each one to its respective horn guide which helps to eliminate quartering problems later.
