Any thoughts on using this gearset (https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/mitre-be ... s/5216036/), for this motor? The shaft is 3mm with a flat for screw, and the axles are standard 3mm.

thanks steamraiser.
The nylon printed are 3x the price of the the acetal (?cast). Is nylon better?

Not really you get two pairs of nylon for £12 and the acetal is £2.88 for one, which is £11 odd for the two pairs.

Thanks, I didn't spot there were two for the price. I suppose the answer is try both.

Re: geareset for this motor?
Jon,
I bought one of these from Taff Vale Models at Railex. They include a pair of nylon bevel gears, which they have used to produce a simple gear box for a small 7mm loco. I'm going to look at modifying the gears for a similar gearbox for p4 (when I have time). In the mean time they may be able to help you with the gears.
Let me know how you get on, and I'll post something when I've reached any conclusions.
Regards,
Geraint

Re: geareset for this motor?
The gears from RS arrived rapidly. They are good crisp Delrin gears. The problem is the large boss which will throw the motor mounting point way off center. Cutting the boss of without damaging the teeth is easier said than done. I think I will mount it on an axle, grip the axle in a vice, then saw through the boss.

Without the boss, will the gears grip the shaft tightly enough?

Will they grip without the boss? we shall have to find out, but some kind of loctite/cyano fixing may help

Re: geareset for this motor?
Jon,
My plan was to mount the final bevel gear on a section of 2mm id tube and then remove a fair amount of the boss. This could then be slid onto a 2mm axle with a grubscrew used to fix it to the axle, thus allowing the drivetrain to be released for checking the quartering. Hopefully there will be room for a simple fold up etched gearbox, which will fit between High Level hornblocks.
Looks like you'll get there before me!

Re: geareset for this motor?
Just received the 3D printed Hazelwood Models gears. They arrived with two sets on a sprue. Surface is very granular. The configuration of the gears is good for fitting between frames. One gear has a bore with a flat on it which fits the drive shaft of the motor. Nevertheless there is an appreciable amount of slack in the fit. The axle mounted gear has a hexagonal bore and is a very slack fit on a 3mm axle. I am not entirely convinced that I will be able to fix them accurately concentric.

I wonder if that gritty finish will introduce lots of friction and/or will it run in to be smooth after a while?

How will the 3D material react to lubricant? Only one way to find out....
That would be an ecumenical matter.
