1mm pinpoint axles

Postby steve howe » Mon Mar 05, 2018 3:51 pm

In his instructions for sprung W irons for 6 wheel chassis, Bill Bedford suggests using 2mm tube riding on a Exactoscale 1mm axle. (E4CW 502) As these axles seem to be currently unavailable from C & L, are there any other sources of 1mm axles?

Yes.............

The metal axle in an Exactoscale axle is 1mm with a pin point end.

See my fairly recent blog post on it here: https://highlandmiscellany.com/2018/02/ ... ing-axles/

It is actually really easy to do and if you look at the follow up post you will see it even works on the fairly rigorously rubbish test track I use!

hmm. I think Steve was after an alternative source of the axles :)
And I don't know of one either. Might just be worth asking Wizard, i think he did once stock them although they are not on his website.

Thanks Keith, I didn't realise such a thing existed until I started Bill's components, I have some very old Studiolith Maunsell wheels with needlepoint axles which look very slender, but even they measure out at about 1.5mm.

I'll see what Wizard has to say!

Sorry, I misunderstood Steve.

As I understand it C&L have bought the rights to the Exactoscale wagon/coach wheels and even have a stock (perhaps all of the stock) of them. However, poor Phil is swamped with his new business and is struggling to keep up with his website ordering let alone answering emails (I simply think he is not doing so) or telephone calls.

Perhaps try calling him a few times and see if he will bring some to the next show you or a mate can get to?

In Bill's method, the wheels are on a tube that slides and rotates around the 1mm axle. The latter doesn't need to rotate. Therefore, a bit of 1mm silver steel that fits into the bearing cones will do. It doesn't need proper pin-points.

I have started a new thread here asking for information about C&L.
