ROD 04 2-8-0 chassis?

Postby jon price » Mon Oct 14, 2013 8:15 pm

Hi

Does anyone know of a chassis kit for the ROD 04 2-8-0? Preferably fittable to the Bachmann model

So, just discovered that Alan Gibson do a conversion wheelset, so a new chassis isn't needed! :D

The only chassis that I know of is the one that came in the old Anchoridge etched kit. Not exactly state-of-the art, but maybe better than nothing.

I did ask Comet Models whether they would consider designing and producing a chassis kit to go under the Bachmann O4. It might happen, but don't hold your breath.
That would be an ecumenical matter.

Jon,

You may find Dave Booth's articles on converting a Bachmann WD 2-8-0 useful. They can be found in S4news 148-150, all available on line.

These articles refer to the Riddles ROD 2-8-0, not to the Robinson (04) 2-8-0 from the First War. both of these, along with the Riddles 2-10-0 entered service outwith the ROD after the respective wars.
There is another article in a later Snooze relating to the O4.
I cannot access the Snooze archive till tomorrow so can't find the article

I used the old Anchorage kit as the basis of my ROD, but chucked the chassis and scratch built a new one. Mind, I ended up chucking away a lot of the rest of the kit as well :!:

Don't know why you junked the chassis I found it a sound basis for a good CSB based chassis, certainly easier than generating one of your own.

I expect a GWR modeller would find himself having to do a fair bit of work to the Anchorage superstructure, but that mostly because they were following in Swindon's footsteps. I reckon the kit, while perhaps a bit basic can be made up into better O4 than the plastic variety, but not somewhere you'd want to go if you've already made the investment in the RTR equivalent so I didn't think it worth mentioning. Anyway I think you'll have a problem finding the kit these days.

Still in development....

....to fit the Bachmann body, replacement running plate for ex GCR version, full CSB to suit Highlevel hornblocks.

Being designed to suit my own requirements but more could be produced on a pre-order basis.

That looks nice. Experience suggests, you are going to find getting the brake gear and and particularly the front sand pipes in a bit fiddly! Not on in the picture above but there now. To go round corners I found it convenient to drive the third axle and let the 4th have a fair bit of available sideplay. I ended up first and third axle, no side play, a little on the second which is constrained by the connecting rod, and a lot on the 4th. Both first and second axle need recessed crank pin nuts. The result goes round 3'6" curves.

That would be more than nice......
A chassis like that may prove very popular :thumb
It seems daft a chassis has not appeared yet for this Loco mind???

Highly interesting. Do let us know if it goes ahead - I've got almost enough parts here to build two 2-8-0s, one as 63601, and the other as one of the Australian ex-RODs.....

Horsetan, I have not heard anything in ages about the ROD's here in Australia I know 2 of them at are at the Dorrigo Steam Railway. I hope they are not rusting away too quickly or any chance that they could be effected by bushfires! It seems the organisation is continuing which is a good thing. Personally I would like to see the Locos in working order and if that required returning to the UK I would support that. In the mean time they seem to be quite comfortable where they are and the Museum is trying to look after all in its care! I have just gone looking for a few photos but I can't really find any good ones!

Dorrigo's problem is that it gives the impression that it had enough money to acquire all the hulks, but doesn't - and may never - have enough funds to restore what it has.

It's a bit like that fella who owns that Crab 42859 (from which major parts like wheels were stolen, possibly with the connivance of the property management company that claims to run Binbrook Airfield). He had the money to buy the thing out of Barry, but he may never have enough money to restore it, particularly as he's now spending his hard-earned on legal and Court fees to pursue the parties involved in the theft of the parts. And having turned down a number of offers to help him with the restoration, he's evidently too proud to accept help.
