Bending fine steel links

Postby Re6/6 » Sun Dec 19, 2021 10:59 am

I use magnetic uncoupling so I acquired some steel bottom links from Ambis which were 'etched' (don't know the the correct terminology) but I'm finding them impossible to bend without snapping. I've tried very gentle incremental bending cold and also after annealing but they just snap. Any ideas please on how to successfully bend them.

Unfortunately my stock of Exacto 4CP SO2A steel links is exhausted.

How did you anneal them?

Heat to red, let cool slowly?

My suggestion would be to bend them whilst red hot - it is how the real thing was made!

Depending on exactly what the material is, annealling probably will not work as it is only effective in removing work-hardening.
