Springs for axle jigs?

Postby jon price » Mon Jan 29, 2018 3:59 pm

Does anyone know where I can get springs to hold hornblocks in place when using an axle jig to construct a chassis?
Alternatively is there another method of holding the hornblocks in place whilst they are soldered into the chassis?

John,

Don't know if this helps but I bought my tapered axle jigs from Chris Parrish - Perseverance Kits - they came complete with springs. He may be happy to split off a set of springs for you.

but ... rather worryingly the web site is not currently responding?

Chris Parrish passed away a few weeks ago, which may explain why the website is down.

Ebay is your friend...

I can't remember the exact lengths of mine (I did use a set before acquiring an Avonside Chassis jig) but I suspect that they are something like 20 x 6 x 1 mm.

In which case this will get you some https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Compression-Spring-Diameter-4-9mm-And-Length-10-70mm-Various-Sizes-Pressure-/222454542337

I'm sure that there are plenty of other alternatives, both cheaper and more expensive, if you have a look around. I just chose that one because it allowed you to choose different sizes.

Thanks Flymo. I always have difficulty finding stuff on ebay because I never know the technical terms to search for.

You flatter me!

I know nothing technical (except perhaps about how motorbikes function) but I've grown up to be not bad at using search engines...

I've just had a quick look for my own jig axles to measure them as a check, but I'm afraid that they aren't in the obvious place - the drawer marked "loco suspension" which is now entirely full of lovely High Level CSB stuff :-)

I'll have a rummage elsewhere...

Cheers

Why not make your own? Get a piece of 0.5mm brass rod and wind a spring around a suitable diameter piece of bar?

You don't need a massive force to hold the horn block in place and I found some of the commercial versions were a bit heavy.

That one worked for the chassis I'm doing, but it is a bit narrow.
Diameter: 6mm Wire diameter: 0.5mm Length-15mm Length: 15mm
