Advice please on the storage of the society's steel track gauges.
I have a persistent rust problem with them despite them being stored in 'zip lock' plastic bags with oiled engineering brown paper.
I do live in a coastal area with the attendant moisture in the air. Whether this has any bearing on the problem, I don't know.
Regarding members in our area group, some have no problem at all, other's do.
Thanks
John

Re: Rusty track gauges.
Have they been used, and were they thoroughly cleaned afterwards?
Do you have other items going rusty?
Have you thought of using silica gel?

Re: Rusty track gauges.
Many thanks for the advice Tim.
Apart from a quick clean, not thoroughly! Perhaps putting them in the ultrasonic cleaner after use would be helpful.
Yes. Steel rail
I shall order some now.
Hopefully these measures will prove to be effective.

I use a sachet of silica gel too but as it suggest unless you clean them after use they still go rusty

Hummmm, sounds like you need to consider what flux you use.
My current favourite is Templers copalux.

Could give this a try?

Expensive at around £15 a can but does the job and should last a long time.
Just spray a little onto a cloth and wipe over.

Hi John,
Try storing them in oil itself. Just a jam jar with a metal lid is fine (plastic lids may be affected by the oil). Any thin oil will do, or mix some car engine oil with paraffin to thin it down a bit. If the oil is too thick it is more trouble to wipe off.
Tie a bit of wire round them so that you can fish them out when needed, a quick wipe, and off you go.
The same for any small steel parts or tools if rust is a problem.
regards,
Martin.
