Bench Drill Replacement

Postby John Bateson » Mon Jan 03, 2011 11:59 am

A bench drill from Clarkes that I have had for about 6 years buzzes a lot but does not work. I am reluctant to open up the motor and play with with it as I might have done quite a few years ago.

Has anybody a recommendation for a suitable replacement. The heaviest job I can currently imagine for it would be to drill a 13mm hole in 1/2inch mild steel (making a 4-way toolpost) although of course there are other ways to kill that particular beast.
I would be happy paying up to £100 - after that I would start to get grumpy.

Tim,
There is a big cylindrical thing attached to the side of the motor with 2 wires, one connected to ground. I suppose this is it?

Could be, but I thought they weren't that big?

Tim,
It took nearly a week to get round the various spares and service places at Clarkes but I got a not-quite replacement this morning which they said would do the job - and it works.
Not quite the neatest bodge repair I've done but it should be safe, without dismantling the motor to get at the original connections.
Incidentally the motor replacement was about £20 more than I paid for the whole drill!

Many thanks for your suggestion about the starting capacitor - saved lots of money!
