Colouring Bill Bedford 3D print three link couplings

Postby jon price » Fri Dec 01, 2017 12:46 pm

Having just bought some of Bil Bedford's very nice 3D printed three link couplings I'm wondering how to colour them. Anyone got any practical experience?

Paint!?

Depends what they are made from. If they are a Shapeways material I got suggestions but it may not be.
If Frosted Ultra/Extreme Detail (FUD/FXD) then I always find a soak in white spirit for an hour before priming seems to work well. Being so small maybe 10 minutes would suffice. The opinions and preferences of cleaning methods for FUD are like bum rings; everyone has one.

Ok. Soaking in white sprit seems like a good idea, thanks. I'm not sure how to go about the next stage as paint would seem likely to just stick them together solid. They have to stay loose.

Thanks guys. white spirit followed by permanent marker looks like the answer.

I cleaned mine with dishwasher powder and water in an ultrasound bath and then coloured them with a Sharpie. Seems to have worked.

Ah. Ultrasound cleaner. I keep meaning to get one of those.

They are remarkably useful, and you would be amazed at the amount of crud, fibreglass splinters, and so on that falls out of a model when you use it. I wouldn't be without one now.

There are periodically good offers on them at Maplin. They wouldn't take a 70" coach in one go (you may have to be inventive and do it an end at a time...) but for thirty quid or so they are a good deal compared to the larger, laboratory standard machines which can be up in the hundreds.

And on a recommendation here (I think from IAK) I now use a proper laboratory cleaning solution called Neutracon. You can buy it online. Not cheap, but very good and doesn't leave residues on the models.

Oh, and it's also very good at bringing the Other Half's best jewellery up with a lovely sparkle, so it's actually a household utility, not a modelling tool ;-)

Never found the need to soak FUD in white spirt. It always seemed to raise a 'knap' on the surface.

Any suggestions? My Wagon springs are still a little 'sticky' despite a scrub with cif using a soft brush?

That maybe the CiF. I've just tried permanent marker on some new FUD sprues and it works very well, and gives a matt finish. Not sure how you would tone down the black though.

No ... they were definitely sticky to touch (buffer castings as well) straight out of the box. The CiF improved things but not a complete cure ... I am relying on the primer to do the rest!

I'm thinking of using brown instead of black, or maybe black on the hook and brown on the links.

Sharpie-brand pens are available in a wide range of colours. Perhaps they do a dark grey?
