Carriage glazing warning

Postby grovenor-2685 » Sun Nov 09, 2008 11:31 am

PRODUCT WARNING !

DO NOT, repeat DO NOT try to soak the - incorrect - white lavatory window
paint or other insignia off Hornby carriage glazing by prolonged submersion
in Phoenix Paints' 'Superstrip'.

The glaring, white lavatory windows are, without doubt, the most obvious
error on Hornby's new Maunsell coaches so I carefully detached them from
one vehicle a week ago, stripped the paint off with 'Superstrip' applied
with cotton buds and elbow grease ........ worked perfectly though a little
laborious ! ( inner surface then frosted by wiping with a Mek-Pak brush to
give the desired finish ).

To do the same in bulk I was going to soak further windows in a jar of
'Superstrip' overnight - but the paint started shifting immediately and
after an hour only seemed to be left in patches which I reckoned, correctly
would wipe off easily ..................unfortunately, there seemed to be a
slight milkiness visible within the plastic and this has since developed
such that some of the windows are now almost as glaringly white as they
started ! - clearly ( if that's not an inappropriate word ) some kind of
reaction between the plastic and the 'Superstrip' ( possibly involving the
rinsing water ? ).

The first pair of windows are still fine so this problem must be due to
exposure time : soaking for ten or fifteen minutes may be OK - definitely
NOT OVERNIGHT !.............. unfortunately I have no supply of samples to
experiment with.
