Id do a trial - find a strip of brass, mask half, spray with grey primer and let it dry, then mask the grey bit and spray the other half with the red, let that dry then spray both sides with the green and see which one comes out better.

Nor brilliant photos I know but these are Halfords red oxide primer on bare brass, with acrylic spray paint top coat. Quite a lot of handling has taken place over several years.
