Hornby Ruston 48DS - P4 conversion and detailing

Postby Triode » Sun May 22, 2022 9:29 pm

Another project I've been working on since Christmas. This little loco has been through the the mill quite literally, having come loose in the milling machine vice while opening out the chassis block to clear the new wheelsets! Fortunately the damage from being flung around wasn't fatal, but some rebuilding was necessary.

Here's a picture of the chosen prototype at an industrial site in Guisborough: https://www.flickr.com/photos/155601626@N07/30118142487/in/photolist-2jmvtfC-2jmy1BS-MTrmsK-2aA5h8f I was drawn to this one in particular not just because of the North East connection, but other quirks such as the different style of obstacle deflectors, the taller exhaust and even a horseshoe on the front grille for luck!

Conversion to P4 made use of 10.5mm Black Beetle wheelsets. They were supplied as solid discs, but I added the prototypical holes for this loco by using the milling machine as a drill press.

The loco is almost ready for painting and finishing. Hopefully the end of this project will go smoother than the beginning...

Looking good. If you wanted a North East connection, the Ransome and Marles Ball Bearing factory at Annfield Plain on the Consett line used one as an internal shunter:

Not the best photo (courtesy of Clive Bennet) but the only one I've ever seen of it:

Thanks John. Is that definitely a 48DS? The proportions look more like an 88DS to me, but as you say it's not the clearest picture!

Everything I've read on the subject (which isn't much) suggests that it is a 48, the company certainly used a 48 at another factory they had in Derby as that one has been preserved.

Could just be me. It does look about the right size for a 48 relative to the wagon now that I think of it, assuming a 16T mineral.
