Oxfordshire / West Berks Group Meeting, Pendon, Tues 9th Jan

Postby ianpenberth » Fri Jan 05, 2024 11:10 am

We'll be meeting at The Pendon Museum, High Street, Long Wittenham, OX14 4QD, on Tuesday 9th January from 19:30 onwards.

We ask for a contribution of £4 per head to cover the cost of the room, including teas and coffees. Other light refreshments are available to purchase.

All welcome at the meeting, whether local or just passing through. Feel free to bring along something you have built or are working on.

Long Wittenham and surroundings are affected by the flooding. At the moment, the road in from the Oxford direction (via the Clifton Hampden lights) is closed, as is the alternative bridge at Culham. The road towards Didcot is open, though there is a shallow flood at the entrance to the village. However, the Ladygrove Straight towards Didcot remains closed for emergency gas main work: it's due to reopen on the 9th. In yesterdays rain, all surrounding roads, regardless of elevation, were susceptible to flooding by surface runoff, to significant depth.

I will try to give a meaningful update on the situation on Tuesday afternoon, though Google maps may be more reliable!

Regards,

Update on the road situation hereabouts:

Clifton and Culham bridges are closed due to flooding, as is Drayton Road between its junctions with Milton Road and Sutton Courtney High Street - flooded at Sutton Courtney.

The 'fairmile' straight from Didcot towards Long Wittenham (aka Abingdon Road) remains closed for 'emergency' gas works - that closure has been extended to mid-January at least.

If coming from the Oxford direction I'd recommend routing via Wallingford (either over Shillingford Bridge into the town or around the bypass), taking the Didcot road from there and the right fork off that at Brightwell to come over Sires Hill towards Long Wittenham.
