OWBAG Meeting Tues 11th Oct - Note CHANGED VENUE

Postby ianpenberth » Sun Oct 02, 2022 4:35 pm

At The Pendon Museum, High Street, Long Wittenham, OX14 4QD, on Tuesday 11th October from 19:30 onwards.

Please note the changed venue for the meeting. We previously met at the Plough Inn in the village. Although we had agreed between ourselves that we would be prepared to make a contribution to room hire, unfortunately the amount that the pub management had in mind, to cover heating over the winter months, was excessive. Therefore I cast around for alternatives and have set up our next meeting at the Pendon Museum, for which we will make a contribution between us for use of the cafe room and any refreshments, around £3 - £4 each depending on numbers. The contribution is a similar amount to what I would have paid for the hire of the Village Hall on the local rate (though the second Tuesday clashes with the Wittenham WI and, believe me, we wouldn't want to do that).

The room at Pendon is better suited to our needs than either the pub or the VH. It is unfortunate that we will miss the refreshments at the Plough; a drink after the meeting is a possibility though with last orders currently at 22:00 on a Tuesday night we might find that a challenge without upsetting the management. Alternatively we could perhaps arrange a get-together for a pint before the meeting for anyone who wishes to do that.

All welcome at the meeting, whether local or just passing through. Feel free to bring along something you have built or are working on.

Please PM me if you need directions to Pendon.

Our first meeting at the Pendon Museum turned out very well. Thanks to Peter and Tim from Pendon for staying on into the evening and making us welcome.

David ran through some images and plans of his embryonic layout based on Barnstaple Junction in the early seventies – being challenged for space has led to some radical 'small radius' engineering in the 'off-stage' areas.

Ian brought along a Heljan 'Western' fitted with his springing kit.

Robin showed progress on a build of the Cambrian SR Pill Box brake van kit, using Bill Bedford springing units on a Palatine base plate, and correcting numerous dimensional errors. His 'Easychas' C Class, shown at a previous meeting, is now running well. He's getting on well with his Dingham couplings, and had a part-used fret to show. The Dingham electromagnets got an honourable mention from Tim.

Tim showed a beautifully weathered WD 2-8-0 in EM, detailed along the lines of Tim Shackleton's article in MRJ, using Bradwell castings, Gibson wheels, 247 fire irons, bits of Masokits signal ladders, and a Modelu crew. This one will be appearing at the Pendon 'Railways in Transition' event on 3rd/4th December.

Peter had one of the 'nearly perfect, but not quite' new Hornby Bogie SR PMVs, converting to P4 with a little bit of work to be doing on the underframe details. An interesting discussion on fitting brass pinpoint bearings to bogies, when there's no room to get one of the 'drilling gadgets' in between the sideframes.

Homework for next time: how high is the fencing around cattle docks?

Next time will be at Pendon again in November, hopefully on the 8th, subject to confirmation. We are now asking for a contribution of £4 per head to cover the use of the room and teas / coffees (with other light snacks also available at cost).

Which railway? I have details of "standard" Southern Railway ones. Obviously their general arrangement varies considerably according to the site and traffic requirements but the components were standard with one important date-of-construction related difference. Until about 1931 they were erected with the horizontal wooden plank "rails" bolted to the outside of the concrete post uprights but from about 1932 this was changed so that they were bolted to the inside of the posts. I presume that cattle were heavy enough to break or push through the bolt fixings, and mounting them inside the posts overcame this.

The SR cattle docks were very widespread as the Company seemed to have pursued a policy of replacing all pregrouping ones of timber construction.

I was sorry not to be able to get to last Tuesday's meeting.

The issue of cattle dock fencing heights was discussed in this forum in the summer of 2020, which may cut down a bit on the amount of homework OWBAG members have to do before next month's meeting.

Thanks Martin, I was just about to go hunting for that thread.

IIRC, the particular query concerned the SR, specifically Hawkhurst.
