Re: New Street progress
Hi All
It must be nearly a decade since I first completed my class 310 EMU and while I was messing with the ride height I have given it a little spruce up. One think I missed in the first build was the wealth of detail to be found on the right hand end bogie as you look at the coaches.
So out with the microstrip and wire and this is the result.
As usual it kind of disappears when its all blended back in colour wise.
While in an EMU frame of mind I have redone the underframes to my class 304. This is the MBS and the curved vent on the left is a suitably reshaped roof vent from Unit Models
Cheers

Hi All
Sticking on the EMU theme this is getting nicely towards the paint shop stage.
Class 303 from DC kits. In the era I am modellling there was a single early morning diagram for a class 303 into New Street. I quite like them anyway so thats why its here!
Cheers

Splendid as always Jim.
Make Worcestershire great again.
Build a wall along the Herefordshire border and make them pay for it.

Hi All
While doing another one of my New Street picture searches a while ago I came across a pic that on first glance I thought was one of mine!
By kind permission of its owner I have been allowed to repost it here

Hi All
Having done my prototype class 155 a while ago the underframes for another 3 vehicles are nearly done.
the picture below shows an out of the box dapol model and one after modification.
Cutting out all of the windows to reposition them flush is a PITA but worth it in the end.
These 2 trains will be the newest to feature on the layout and given their somewhat iffy origins (Dapol) they have turned out pretty well I think.
Cheers

Hi All
Work on the bridge piers for the London end tunnel.
Theres a chance viewers might get to see some of this side if the wall and the road above dont block the view
No chance they will get to see this side though!
Cheers

Thanks Neil
Changing the subject a little, I decided to make a dent into a project thats been in my to do pile for a few years now - Namely a sister class 310 to the NSE one I already have.
I had already in the long distant past stuck the self adhesive window frames to the sides but that was as far as I got so with an undisturbed day and a fit of enthusiasm the kit now looks like this!
Close up of the DTC
Roof vents and some filling and sanding next I think, Its a real shame there aren't more Modern Image kits like this.
Not a bad days work really
Cheers

Very nice Jim, Your work is always inspirational. I know that to make time progress is achieved but you manage to have lot done in the time you have available
The best I seem to get is about a 15 or so parts on in one go! I feel my Q6 is going at a glacial pace..

I think that it's the inspiration to have a go at modelling "little and often". That's what I keep resolving, and I'll keep trying at it.
On the other hand, part of the skill is when *not* to do any more, says he, glancing at the drying paint on the chassis on the workbench. Must leave that one until some time tomorrow!

I do agree Flymo. I think that I am doing a better job of the Q6 because it sits on the end of the dinning table. Each time I look at that end, I think to myself what is the next part to be installed. Which if I have 15 minutes or more I usually go and sit down, look at the part, turn the soldering Iron on, then proceed to put it and another part on. I am stumped at the moment playing "name that part" trying to figure out which of the un numbered castings I should be puting on, as there is the hard bit of the jigsaw of which option for the casting!UMMMM

Hi both
I think it's important to allow 'thinking' time. I tend to get more done if I have a definate plan of what I want to do and how to do it. In the case of this kit I am advantaged by being familiar with the prototype and having built one before (a long time ago but it's amazing how it all comes back!).
Cheers

Re: New Street progress
Totally agree Jim, if you have done one before you don't have hte learning curve to the kit as you have an idea of how the kit designer thought through the problem and how you resolved it in a better way. As I am finding with a High Level Black hawthorn read the instructions... then reread them a day later. Think about the material Whitemetal or brass figure out a better sequence to put things together. Ie build the dome off the model install all the brass leavers and LWC'ings then install on the body. (I was doing this last night!) I did have a little trouble in that it would have been better to NOT have the cab on first! Now I am to the problem of the fire box back head which needs some more things glued on the install it in the cab. Again would have been easier if the cab was not in place!

Re: New Street progress
I have found that having done something before is no guarantee of its being easy to repeat. There have been a number of occasions when I have been faced with some constructional problem, and recalled that I had been there before but, even when carefully examining the earlier model, ended up thinking - "How the hell do I do that?" - and then having to re-invent the wheel.
The answer, of course, is to make notes as you go along and keep them for future reference, but it is easy to forget, or to be in too much of a hurry to be bothered with writing up notes.

Jim that it looking great and i am so happy that I can make it to Scalefourum this year and to see your modelling in the flesh will certainly be a highlight. Been a tough week for me this week so the progress is non existant. Though looking at your photos makes me think even more seriously about starting my P4 donut! and that dare I say is the point of this group!

Yes it is a bit of a way and the idea of brining something good enough to run is something that fills me slightly with dread. I have the intention of bringing my Q6 and the Black hawthorn.... better get on with both if they are to get any where near being ready but it looks like I will have a bit of time on my hands before I get to the holiday which might solve the problem and also had a email from Colin Seymour that the wheels for the Black Hawthorn are on their way! Oh I believe you know Brett Whelan who is local to me also!

Hi All
In the light of more information I have been busy adding a representation of rodding and facing point locks to one of my double slips.
Recently I seem to have had a bit of a rat infestation

Do they just look like rats, or do they sound like rats too?
