Re: 1980's cars and other road vehicles
Hi All
Seems like the 1980's never happened. At least when it comes to decent cars in 4mm scale! However at least TPM do some kits that are not only 4mm scale but not daft, super car types.
First up, a few Ford Escorts.
Next Bernards Capri with a Cararama one for comparrison
Cheers
Jim

Re: 1980's cars
When I was a kid I always wanted a MKI Capri. We had a purple MkII that my dad wrote off, then a white MkII with a black vinyl roof, and after that a blue MkIII with a 3l engine and sunroof, and white wheels, which was great, but I always thought the MkIs looked the best.

Seventeeen years old, with a mate with a driving licence and white 2 litre Capri GL...
Babe-magnet-tastic!
Glory days! By co-incidence I had to resist a clutch of 1980's remix CD collections on Amazon earlier this afternoon... :-/

Re: 1980's cars
Although there are now a lot of 50s cars available, there is a gap in pre war cars, a lot of which survived until the dreaded MOT.
Cars I owned in the 80s were a Mini Clubman estate on an L plate (1972), a Ford Cortina Mk1 on a D plate (1966), a Morris Marina on a K plate (1972) and right at the end a Morris Ital on a Y plate.
Don't forget Jim there were still a lot of 60s and 70s cars around in the 80s.

Re: 1980's cars
It was green, somewhere I have a picture of it, but it had a Bristol registration, and I bought it in Bristol, so it was unlikely to have been in Brum, but you never know I just thought, I was riding my 1954 motorbike in the 80s, in fact it was last on the road in '86
Plenty of ideas for cars that would have been around in the 80s.

Re: 1980's cars
Hi All
I know you should never compare models with other models but there is a point to this.
Below are ford Capri's and Ford Escorts from the TPM kits and Oxford Diecast (the TPM capri is silver and the escort is blue)
Of the Oxford cars the Capri seems the better of the 2. But the tyres on both look horrible! So the lower two pictures are digital mock ups of what the Oxford cars look like with TPM wheels. I know the escort ones aren't right for a XR3i but I plan to convert most of them back to 'normal escorts anyway.
Cheers

Shouldn't there be 4mm scale male figures with perms, and arranged in a "rolling over the Capri bonnet" pose?
That would be an ecumenical matter.

Hi All
A few more things on the bench, first up sticking with minis
No modifications to the white one other than stripping it and repainting it with thin paint! Plus a spot of weathering of course.
This one isnt ever going to win any beauty contests but given my thoughts when I first opened the packet I am quite pleased with how its turning out.
The mk2 bread van, painted and weathered and finally...
Anyone remember Associated Deliveries Limited?
Cheers

Hi all
As a distraction from layout building (see my layout thread) I have been working on these 4
Spot the difference! 2 of them have been assembled as the kit comes while the other 2 have had the doors carefully cut out and remounted to represent the sliding type as used by the post office
Cheers

Hope that those post office ones will look like the rusty dented wrecks that prowled the streets in years past.....

Next up as a vehicles project is these
I already have some Mk1 transits and a couple of Mk3's but what I really need is mk2's. Luckily ABS streetscenes sell their mk2 nose casting as a spare so these 4 are for the chop!
Cheers

Hi Jim,
Those Royal mail vans look absolutely lovely!
When are you going to finish the white van though? Having seen literally hundreds of the things in the paddocks at motorbike race meetings over the years, I don't think that I've ever seen one as clean as yours.
There should be a liberal sprinkling of rust around most of the door edges and up the hinges, a big rusty scrape along one if not both sides and last but not least, three week's worth of Sun newspapers and mound of empty drinks cans cluttering the dash.
You surely aren't saying that they weren't delivered from the factory like that?

Re: 1980's cars and other road vehicles
The white one is due to be pretty new!
A couple more Royal Mail vehicles. On the left a re-liveried Base Toys Roadtrain with Pirate Models front wheels and some added detail, On the right a Corgi/Base toys Hybrid Ford Cargo. I didn't realise I had run out of Roadtrain mirrors though!
Also OMWB as a couple of quickies
On the Left, Ford Consul and on the right, Cortina both from Oxford Diecast. Usual treatment is to spay them with matt varnish, turn the tyres down a bit, subtle weathering and fit occupants. (the Cortina is destined to be parked) I ground off the spotlights on the consul and both will be re-registed.
Cheers

Re: 1980's cars and other road vehicles
Hi All
first strides into my Mk2 transit van project.
First up the destructive bit.
The main pic shows the Mk 1 nose cut off. This is a straight cut just in front of the windscreen and then the body has been cut back under the windscreen to 1mm in front of the doors. The first small pic shows the trimming required to the interior for the new nose to fit and the second likewise for the glazing (originals on the right in both pictures) The glazing is simply held in place in the chopped van body and trimmed with a razor saw.
Test fit of the new nose. The rear of the nose has been trimmed slightly to fit. You can see how the body is wider than the new nose so some filling and shaping is required.
Cheers

Re: 1980's cars and other road vehicles
Hi All
Pondering this over night I decided it would be easier to fill the bonnet than match the sides. Next morning someone on another forum had suggested the same so as 2 of us thought it a good idea...
...theres a ridge down the bonnet that lines up with the angles at the front - seemed the obvious place to make a couple of cuts with the razor saw and to spread the nose a smidge.
After a spot of filler.
Cheers

Hi All
Slapped some paint on the transit. Turned out quite well i thought. In the end I just glued the wheels solid and filled the hubcaps.

Hi All
A little over a year ago I was kindly given a Springside kit for the Mini Clubman, I tried several things to get the parts in the kit to actually look like a Mini Clubman, all of which failed! So depositing most of it in the round filing cabinet that lives on the floor the front of the nose and the wheels have been grafted onto a Corgi Mini.
Much happier with it now...
The pic in the oval is as far as I got with the original kit.
Cheers

Hi All
A comparison of Minis.
On the left - out of the box. Centre repainted (with thin paint) and fitted with smaller wheels (from a springside kit) and on the right the Clubman conversion.

Hi All
Drawing a close to my ford Cargo project with this ADL version
Needs a spot of weathering on the wheels then its done.
This brings my fleet of Cargo's to 7 which is enough for now
A good que for someone to bring a good RTP one out I think!
Cheers

Re: 1980's cars and other road vehicles
Hi All
Been doing a spot more work on Mk2 transit vans. First up, for those interested in such things this site it pretty handy
http://fordtransit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=46969
Now then - to the models. First up the quickie one
Similar to the blue one but with wheels from paragon models and the addition of a side door. (door scribed on - hinges and handle from microstrip)
the middle difficulty one - this will end up a luton. I didnt go mad on the chassis as you wont see it but if you had the patience and did want to go for it a rake of these without bodies, mounted on a load of Carflats would be pretty cool.
Finally - this is the awkward one. Conversion to a long wheelbase. I have used the spare back from a previous luton conversion and so far sorted the nose and the roof. the drivers door will need converting to a slidey type and the rear wheel arches need making. Also the rear vent needs filling and the rear panel (below the waist and behind the rear axle needs filling and re-shaping.
Cheers
