Hi All

Thanks to feedback on another forum my Lutons now have a representation of Translucent roofs.

Image

Another project that was a tad more involved than I first thought was my VW van.

Image

The main thing was to file the windscreen aperature to allow a much wider window. Another minor mod was to thin the bumper down under the doors where it forms a step and drill out the headlights.

Hi All

Progress on my White arrow van

A little comparison of where it started from.

I am hoping this might end up another signature vehicle (like my WHSmiths lorry) that spark a few memories for people.

This next project was a bit of a suck it and see one - the Ford Sierra from the Hornby (um) thing. Suck it and see because it it didnt work out its no big deal. Below is what I came up with (with an original for comparison)

Hi All

A modernised mini (if you can call something about 30 years old modernised), its shown here compared with the original version

Image

As an aside this is Halfords ford signal yellow which is supposedly a good match for Warning panel yellow - as you can see its no where near.

Those Minis need the silver plastic trim along the seams hanging off, could never get it to stay on. If only Duct Tape had been invented earlier....

How old was your Mini then Tim?

"In 1942 Revolite, formerly a division of Johnson & Johnson, originally developed an adhesive tape made from a rubber-based adhesive applied to a durable duck cloth backing. This tape resisted water and was used as sealing tape on ammunition cases during World War II"

My Mini (my first every car - a chocolate brown Clubman) would never have had silver trim on the seams - you couldn't have forced it in place over the bubbling rust! That car finally bit the dust when the driver's door fell off due to the metal collapsing around the hinges...

Great fun though, and I'd have a "classic" Mini again if I had the room. Although in terms of classics, I'm currently talking with a friend about acquiring this:

I just need to find space in the garage...

Minis without the chrome trim still had a metal finisher applied, it was just that it was the same colour as the rest of the body. My old pick-up had these and they seemed to last much better than the plastic chrome - my truck had withstood a flood and cost all of £20 but still gave another four years service. For the real mini afficionados it was one of the very rare commercials with a one piece rear bumper rather than the pair of quarter bumpers.

My Mini was a Clubman Estate on a K plate, so would have been about eight years old when I got it and about 11 years old when it went to the great motorway in the sky in '83. I then acquired a MK1 Cortina (now there's another car for you to model Jim) on a D plate which lasted till about '87. My first car was a split screen Morris Minor which went to the great A road in the sky in '74, if only I'd kept it. Bit outside Jim's period.

Umm nice looking bike there Paul. I'm sure there's room in the garage....

During the eighties I was also spinning around on my BSA Bantam (still got it now), a 1955 model - another item for Jim to model!

And I was shown today on the Finney and Smith stand a BSA Bantam produced by 3D printing. I think one may appear on Clutton.....

Now I am really asking for trouble - the VW beetle!

My friend had an 'oval' so i have attacked the oxford beetle.

Image

So far I have filed off the canvas roof, added a small bit of filler to the upper windscreen corners (the windscreens seemed rounder on the oval beetles) and filed off the indicators. the rear window was glued and filled and an oval cut into it (needs a bit more filler yet). Luckily the oxford beetle has the smaller tail lights as per my friends car.

An acquaintance of mine lives in Coventry. He has a 1974 NSU Ro80. Not inconceivable that he drove it around Birmingham in the 1980s...

I have to  admit I've quite enjoyed getting to grips with this.  The beauty of a white metal kit is that you can tweak it with low melt solder used as a filler.  You don't have to wait for it to dry and it doesn't break away when you attack it with files and filler.  I decided to do a solid sided box and do away with the windbreak in the end.  I also replaced the marker/indicator lights and added the rainstrips from wire. The front panel, below the windscreen was filled with solder, sanded smooth and the panel re-scribed so that it was the same height at both ends! Below is where it is now.

Still some little details to do but this ones pretty much done.

Theres a certain sense of achievement when kits don't just fall together from the box.
