Weskie's Workbench
Inspired by the fact that we've had a few entries recently showing the latest wagon builds, i thought i'd join the bandwagon and put up a couple of my own for your delight.
First up:
Mousa Models D1 open wagon.
Assembled straight out of the box, it went together really easy.
Waiting for the paint shop.
Then we have a London Road Models D14 Deal wagon.
Still under construction. Modified to have sprung axles using some of the original Exactoscale FASS units.
Finally a LNWR 10t Brake van, also from London Road.
The newer version of the old D & S kit.
Also modified to sprung axles using some Bill Bedford units.
Hope you like them.

Very nice; I have one of the brake vans to build and had been considering getting one (or more) of the D1s. Was there much work involved springing the brake van, haven't looked that closely at the one I have stashed away ready for a rainy day of wagon building?

It was easy really, just soldered the Bedford units to the floor, using the Exactoscale axle jig to get the correct wheelbase, instead of folding down the compensated w-irons. Also check buffer height is correct. Although if it is the old D & S kit, i think i'm right in saying no floor is supplied, but not to much trouble to fit one.

About time for an update.
I had a delay with the Deal wagon as i wasn't sure how the brakes worked, but managed to sort that after borrowing a copy of the LNWR wagon book.
I've also been assembling a LNWR horse box.Another LRM kit. Also pictured a signal box, also from LRM. This is beginning to sound like an advert?
No connection really.
I've just fetched this lot out of the sonic bath,which is excellent for finding parts that weren't attached very well. I see that a roof vent is missing, will have to go fishing for that.
A bit more cleaning up required then on to the paint shop.

Thought it was about time for another update, especially after getting a mention in S4news.
So with the rather dodgy weather that comes with a bank holiday I've taken some photos of progress so far!
And just when you thought you'd finished the photo shows up something you've missed.
Mousa Models D1. Still need to blacken the wheels.
LRM D14.
I've also built a pair of 51L MR Dia 336 long low sided wagons. Also fitted with Bill Bedford springing units. Not happy with the buffers on these, they are unsprung, but the castings are damaged so it's not possible to drill them out to fit springs. Just visible on the bottom buffer. I'll have to get some replacements at S4north.

Weskie, you're gonna have to stop uploading completed wagon pictures. My mouth is already dry with saliva loss and my top is gooey. :/

That was what i was hoping for at S4North, but i see they aren't there.
I have used mail order (last resort for me) and had good service. I might want some, so joint order? Discuss Thursday………

The D1 kit comes with it's own springing unit.
The 2 midland wagons, I've used RCH 1907 w-irons BWF001/4.
The LRM Deal wagon has some old type Exactoscale units.
The brake van also had the BWF001/4.
And the horse box used RCH NPCS BWF003/4

the LRM LNWR Deal wagon has its own compensated underframe.
The LRM LNWR 10T brake van originally had D&S w-irons but the newer version has its own compensated underframe too.

Thanks for the information.
Jol, I'm inclined to change and use springing if I can just out of preference.
Got a coal tank to finish first that I'm struggling to get running but thats a different story for a different thread!

You are quite right, both the LRM kits came with compensated underframes.
but as i prefer springing they have both been modified accordingly.

Oh dear where does the time go? Nearly a year since the last post and i thought i'd have more to show for it. There has been some activity, mainly on Scrubbs lane part of Clarendon to get it presentable for the Scalefour display at Warley. It's not finished but it's coming on as those who attended will have seen. Anyway back to wagons. Afraid the Midland long lows' still look like the previous picture. They will be next on the agenda to finish after these two.
Something acquired off Fleabay and converted to a D3, just about ready for the paint shop.
Also.
A coke wagon for Clarendon gas works. In order to get a rake of these we've each had two to build, one loaded, one empty. I'd better pull my finger out as i'll be the last to finish. nearly one down one to go.
Here's a finished one. I can't even say 'one i finished earlier' Built by Pete Bettany.
Must try to update a bit more often.

As far as i can tell they only had single brake blocks. Originally wooden, upgraded to cast iron pushrod type around 1896.

Due to putting an entry on the 'Socially-distanced challenge' thread. I thought i'd review this thread. Wow 3 years since the last entry. But just to show i haven't been totally lazy, here's some finished wagons.
A pair of D3. The left hand one being the conversion from above. The right hand one a Mousa Models.

My pair of Clarendon coke wagons

A pair of private owner coal wagons from a Cambrian "Wheeler & Gregory" kit
Finally an NER van and Midland sheeted open that i started so long ago that i can't remember whose kits they are. Possibly 51L.

Lovely stuff, Andy -especially the Wheeler and Gregory pair - I have a fair stash of those for Earl Waldegrave wagons and other Radstock collieries. I am thinking of a batch-build of bodies, for now.....

Looking good! I couldn't get on with the laminated etched wheels, and ended up swapping them for lowmac wheels on which I left the cone but removed the flange. These are 10.5mm rather than 10mm. This isn't to say the originals can't be made to work in the right hands!
