Water Tower Tank

Postby John Donnelly » Wed Oct 26, 2016 9:23 pm

Does anyone know if the panels that make up the tank in this photo are available commercially in 4mm scale?

Image

The Hornby Scaledale water tower tank is a pretty good match but, as it's cast resin, it's not particularly 'fine scale'

Alan Gibson has two versions in his catalogue,
WATER TANK PANELS
Pack of 16 etched brass Water Tank Panels, extra packs can be added to achieve the required size of tank and you will need brass
angle to complete. The Midland Railway panels measure a scale 4’ x 3’ and the Braithwaite panels a scale 4’ x 4’.
Code Item Price Price
4MM92 Midland Railway Water Tank Panels (16) £4.42 £5.30
4MM93 Braithwaite Water Tank Panel (16) £4.42 £5.30

I don't know if they would match.

Looks like a LNWR water tank.The loco also has a LNWR look about it.

There is a thread on RMweb;

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index. ... ed/page-23

showing a very impressive build of Camden Shed (albeit in OO and LMS period), The builder has used the AGW Braithwaite panels. presumably because they are closes to the photo.

The Ambis price list shows a 3D acrylic component for a MR tank.

Edit - I've know had a look at a picture of the Scaledale raised water tank and think it isn't close enough. The panels are rectangular rather than square and it has a pitcherd, rather than a flat roof (as on LNWR tanks).

A quick search turned up this;

http://www.cwrailways.com/building-parts.html

which looks rather nearer to the photo.

Interesting. The RMweb thread has several photos of the Camden shed water tank and it looks as though the paneling is the same. Bought in from an outside supplier perhaps.

The tank at Rugby - shown in the excellent "WarwickshireRailways.com" site is quite different. However, these photos are all in LMS/BR days so I don't know if the tanks are the original LNWR ones or if Camden is unusual.

The 3D printed tank panels from cwrailways look nearest to your photo.

A quick Google will tell you that Braithwaite panels have been in production by an independent company since 1901 and they are still at it. These panels were patented by the company so if it looks like a Braithwaite panel it probably is. That said your picture looks more like a cast panels than a pressed ones so could be a railway company product?.
