GNR lamp posts

Postby Hardwicke » Sun Sep 18, 2016 10:39 pm

Does anyone know the colour of GNR gas lamp posts? Both brown and cream, light apple green, or dark green are options. Possibly also black.

Hello Michael.
You have not mentioned which period you are referring to, but here's something which may be of help.

GN Circular No 147(ED) of the Engineer's Office, King's Cross Station dated March 1915, entitled "FINISHING COLOURS FOR PAINTING" states the following.
"Lamp Posts.................................................Same as roof columns
Lamp brackets and brackets to notice boards .........Dark brown and once varnish
Lamps......................................................Outside, light green, and once varnish; inside white.

And in case anyone's wondering if this is a chocolate teapot (dark brown of course) here's the missing bit.

Columns...............Bases to about 5 feet high, dark brown, with 1 1/2"" black band and once varnish; above, light brown.
Columns above capital.... Light stone."

Hope this is of help to you,
Ken

Michael, some more info at http://www.stationcolours.info/index.php?p=1_8_GNR-SCHEDULE if you have not checked that site out. 1899-1915 Circulars 101 and 147(ED)

I can't really mention a period as it refers to a real one and the post displays rust, something dark (grey or black), possible cream and brown, a light green (almost apple green), a darker green (brunswick?) a grey or silver, red lead and a whiteish. I also have photos of interior colours - fresh brown wood and faded wood (one was preserved under a fitting, since removed) from within a GNR building - Chocolate brown, thin red line then cream.
