Can anyone advise what colour the L & Y (and LMS) painted the iron framed windows in their warehouses?
Many thanks

I believe that the answer is white but I have not been able to confirm this in the various books I have available. The interior of such buildings was whitewash.
So as no one has answered your question, can I suggest you try the L and Y Society. See http://www.lyrs.org.uk.I am sure they will be able to assist.

Re: L & Y windows
Thanks Peter,
At the risk of answering my own thread, for anyone else intersted in this matter, here is Chris Leach's response from the L & Y Society:
As far as I can ascertain, the L&Y painted iron frames black – or ”finish”, underlain by 3 coats of “flat lead”. I expect the result would be a dark grey. No official paint scheme for the L&Y seems to have survived.
The LMS didn’t start using LMS colours until the mid 1930’s, possibly 1936 onwards. Previous colour schemes would have remained until then. The LMS may well have used LMS dark red for goods station window frames (I have seen ex-Midland stations so restored), but it seems that any one of several possible colours could have been used, and it may well be best to stick with grey-black!
I recommend the Station Colours” website at:
http://www.stationcolours.info/
which is intended for railway modellers.
Regards
Chris
