Barrow Road had a hydraulic wheel drop situated on an extension of road 14 at the rear of the roundhouse. A brick built shelter, with buttress walls and a corrugated asbestos roof provided rudimentary shelter for shed staff although this must have proved unsatisfactory as a brick extension was added between the shed wall and the shelter to cut down draughts.
Photo taken in 1965 by Robin Whittle.
Photo Robin Whittle collection.
The model is made from Slaters plasticard brick sheet and sections of plain plasticard.
In order to fix the walls in position I have inserted short lengths of brass tube into the base of 2 of the buttress wall supports, each side, and these slot over pieces of 0.8mm n/s wire fixed into the baseboard. The structure is therefore removable. The 4 girders in the roof are made from plastruct 'I' and are held in place using n/s wire inserted into holes at the top of the buttress.
The roof is fabricated from 4 lengths of square section brass and nickel silver strip to which I have soldered Ambis copper corrugated sheet. A length of gutter from half section brass tube has been added to the right side.

Re: Barrow Road Wheel Drop Shelter
More progress made with the shelter now painted and weathered and fixed in position on road 14.
First a representation of the wheel drop was fabricated and positioned at the middle of the track under the shelter before assembling the walls, roof girders and the corrugated roof.
I have a few more details to add such as the two lights at the front of the shelter shown in the photo of 51202 in my previous post.
Can anyone suggest a suitable source of such lights, working or non working?

Making up those lights from scraps of plastic, plus soldered up bits of wire for the supports, should be a quick job. The bricks immediately behind the left hand one even give a very good idea of the dimensions involved. That leaves the question of colour, in the absence of information to the contrary I would go for dirty black with the underside of the shade white.

They are copper with a brown shade white underneath

Re: Barrow Road Wheel Drop Shelter
I have finally got around to fitting the R T Models gas lamps to the wheel drop building.
Thanks for the suggestion Michael.
