Just shows the lengths the full sized railway would go to to get a three point suspension .
Best wishes for Christmas, Robin.

Re: Iain Rice built Midland/LMS 2P
A bit more progress on the 2P this time on the tender. I decided to substitute a Dave Frank's Fowler chassis to which I have added sprung pick-ups to Will Litchfield's design. I have soldered a miniature two pin socket to the pcb - at the left in the photo.
This is the underside view. the two pin connector is just behind the front axle.
I have attached black electrical tape to the inside edge of the tender to prevent electrical shorting.
Iain Rice fitted a Portescap motor to the model which unfortunately protrudes into the cab. I decided to replace this with a High Level unit which arrived in the post on Saturday. I shall move onto this next.

barrowroad wrote:Peter, the Iain Rice 2P is assembled from an Alan Gibson LMS 2P Kit. Gibson also produced a kit for the Midland 483 2P - I have one in the stock cupboard. Bristol Barrow Road had a number of the Midland right hand drive 2P's allocated in the 1950's as follows
40332 - Feb 1957 to Sept 1958. It was withdrawn in Feb that year.
40424 - Jan 1951 Withdrawn Jan 1952.
40426 - October 1951 to October 1957. It was withdrawn in October that year.

Copyright Eric Sawford taken 31st August 1955.
40486 - June 1952 to Feb 1957. It was withdrawn in Feb that year.
40489 - was Gloucester based from Sept 1952 to Feb 1958 when it was stored and then withdrawn - it was a regular in Bristol.
40501 - Dec 1957 to June 1960. It was withdrawn in Sept 1958 and Ivo Peters photographed it in store.
As for their use the 2P allocation of Barrow Road, Gloucester and Bournville were all used on the Bristol - Gloucester - Birmingham passenger trains during the 1950's.
thank you so much for the info - as I'm depicting 1959-61 they're all gone and only 40537 remains, and then loaned out. From the photos I've seen the Bristol - Gloucester locals seem to be in the hands of 4Fs or a variety of class 5s in 'my' period.

Peter, I'm pleased you like the information. Have you seen the latest George Heiron book " George Heiron's Travels Midland & Western" by Leslie Price?
It contains some fabulous photos of the Bristol to Gloucester line in the 1950's and early 60's which I highly recommend.
ISBN: 978-1-013251-39-0

The correct ISBN is 978-1-913251-39-0. Thanks for the heads-up, though, Robin.

Thanks for the tip - I don't have that one I'll need to look out for it. George Heiron as a photographer has 'fallen out' of my consciousness having concentrated on S&D related photo books - my 'bad'

Re: Iain Rice built Midland/LMS 2P
It's been a bit too cold to work in my shed over the past few weeks but this weekend I have made a bit more progress on my Iain Rice 2P.
The chassis has been painted and weathered, driving wheels and bogie fitted and a High Level Roadrunner+ installed.
Pickups for the loco and tender fitted.

Progressing very nicely, Robin.
Is it just the angle of the photo, or does the front of the loco dip down?
Dave.

Hi, Dave thanks. It does dip down in the photo as I realised I had only placed the body on the chassis for the photo. I'll post some more tomorrow plus a video of it on it's first DC powered test run.

Re: Iain Rice built Midland/LMS 2P
It's been a while but I had a few issues with the model derailing on curves and put it aside to do other modelling.
There were 2 issues:
1. the Bill Bedford frames did not give enough clearance on the front bogie so I decided to file a deeper curve above each bogie wheel to allow more swing.
2. the driver bearings gave extremely limited side movement on the rear axle when using Gibson 2P wheels - solved by removing some of the boss on the rear of each wheel.

Nice smooth running carried out with DC supply so decoder to fit tomorrow followed by a video.

the pickups look neat, far neater than anything I've ever made in this department. Can I ask for more detail (or a blow up photo) of how they are done?
thanks, Peter

Re: Iain Rice built Midland/LMS 2P
The video makes me so wish I had seen the real thing before its destruction. Despite living in Bristol from 1956 I didn't get to see it until 1971 by which time it was a wasteland (somewhere else I will recount why, something like the 'had to walk to school in the snow with no shoes' kind of sob story). So your layout brings me great joy Robin!
Thank you too, and Will L for the links on how to make pickups, I'm looking forward to giving it a try, need to source some thinner PB wire, a challenge in Norway

Re: Iain Rice built Midland/LMS 2P
The Iain Rice 2P has been to the paintshop and has received a coat of black cellulose and it's 40696 identity. Thank you Morgan.
Here it is seen passed the shed with a rack of Hornby Maunsell coaches on a Bath to Bristol local. Not the usual motive power but.......
On shed are two converted Bachmann Midland 3F's 43444 and 43712 which have just returned after being beautifully weather by David Clarke.

Absolutely beautiful, thank you for posting and very inspirational for me. I look forward to trying to create my own ....
BTW thanks to a visitor courier-ing some railway items from the UK I know have 0.3mm phosphor bronze wire so I can have a go at Will's beautiful tender pickup method (don't hold your breath I've spent the last three weeks in 30minute / 1 daily hour sessions to get my old-style Perservence GW Pannier flexichas chassis to the stage of being ready to add wheels, update coming on my workshop thread soon)

Really good to see 40696 complete with paint job and insignia, and I love the 'stately progress' of this big-wheeled engine! Not an unreasonable substitution for booked motive power, which I assume would normally be an Ivatt Class 2. Moreover, the 39x series Maunsell 3-set is spot-on for Diagram 508 in the Bristol Division CWN for the summer of 1959, which amongst other trains covered the 3/40 Up from Bournemouth West: a train celebrated for having priority over others on the S&D's single line sections in order to assure its connection with the 7/25 Bristol-Newcastle Mail at Mangotsfield. This might very well be that train.

A superb runner! Glad to see that the swings in Atchley Park have now been populated. Obviously not trainspotters as they would be facing the opposite way and standing on the seats to read the cabside number over the top of the wall.

Goodness me, they must be time travellers, Robin. Did you get yourself scanned at the same time? I think we need to see a spotter leaning over the wall at the rear of the shed.

40696 has now returned from being weathered by Gerry Beale and looks superb - thanks Gerry.
