A few minutes on Barrow Road bridge

Postby 45609 » Fri Jun 04, 2021 1:18 pm

For the first time in a very long time I spent a pleasant couple of socially distanced hours around at Robin's. During that time we had a go at capturing a couple of videos. Imagine yourself pausing for about 10 minutes on Barrow Road bridge on your way to work, the shops or to see an old friend...

Very good, Morgan. Did that represent a workers train bringing staff to the shed - hence the stop?

Hi Dave,

Not really sure about a workers train but I know there is a signal (yet to be installed) near where the loco pulled up. I just reasoned that the line at Lawrence Hill box was blocked due to a train of ECS being backed into the sidings. After a short pause the line cleared and the loco could proceed up Fishponds bank. Glad you liked the video.

Cheers...Morgan

Excellent! I can just see myself and mates playing on the swings while we watched a variety of locos arrive on shed each evening or climbing over the bridge on Days Road round the back.

Another few minutes sat on Barrow Road bridge at the right time of day can be very rewarding.

Stand to one side of the running line though; otherwise you get a face full of smut and smoke!

That play park needs populating. Rarely more than four individuals in my day, aged around 12 dressed in jeans and daps. Always went there on foot so no pushbikes.

Roy I agree and I hope to persuade Alan of Modelu to produce some suitable 1950/60s teenagers at some point.

Daps! That's what we called them in Lampeter. Not heard that word in about 40 years...

I'd willingly volunteer to be a model but I'm at least a foot taller these days and not much hair, well none actually. Lost track of my three mates when we left school. I'm struggling to remember what sort of shirts we wore in those days.

For anyone not familiar with the term 'daps', they were also known as plimsolls.

If you can still get the clothes of those two eras [the late 1950s were very different to the late 1960s from what I remember], what chance of getting current teenagers to model them? Or the hairstyles [perms for the girls in most cases in the 50s, and still a short back and sides for most the boys]? :D
