Bachmann 1P Johnson 0-4-4T 58072

Postby barrowroad » Mon Mar 01, 2021 5:25 pm

I have just converted a Bachmann 1P Johnson 0-4-4T to P4 and here is a video of it plus Morgan's coach passing Barrow Road shed.
If anyone would like details of the conversion please ask.

That's going to need some heavy weathering to carry that livery in your period Robin! Sounds good.

Robin,

Is that the Bachmann sound chip?

Richard, Yes it is - I believe it is from the Zimo stable.

I was most impressed by the running and the sounds.

How did you go about the conversation?

Yes, that is impressive, Robin. I'd also be interested to know more about the conversion, please.

Tim/Philip,

My conversion is fairly basic. I have replaced the Bachmann wheels with Alan Gibson drivers and pony wheels - 5'2" drivers with 1/8in axles and 3'0" 2mm axle wheels for the trailing bogie.
First problem is the model has 3mm axles on the drivers.
Each Bachmann axle is held in a pair of square shaped bearings which fit into slots in the cast chassis. These and the gearwheel require opening out from 3mm to 1/8in.
The wheels need removing from their axles before removing the 4 bearings and tapping the gear off the axle.
Opening up was done very carefully by hand using a suitable broach.

I have used Alan Gibson 1/8in washers as spacers between the chassis and the rear of each wheel. 2.5mm is required each side made up of 2 x 1mm and 1 x 0.5mm washers. Make sure you refit the bearings and the washers in the correct order when reassembling the drivers on their axles.

The wheels on the trailing bogie are also fitted with Alan Gibson 2mm washers. Again 2.5mm each side.

Crankpins are Markits 10BA (RM7?). I opened out - drilled - the crankpin holes to 1.27mm and tapped them to 10BA.

Coupling rod holes were reduced using AGs brass washers - 4800? using a spot of solder to retain in place.

Refit all wheels and test the chassis.

Next the body.

The footplate is too narrow over the wheels and need metal removed to 22.7mm. I used an abrasive circular slitting disc in my dremel to VERY carefully remove metal. Do this slowly and make sure you do not remove too much or it will break through the splashers. Don't ask how I know!!

The small 'splasher' for the crankpin nut will also require widening.

I will post some photos later.

Robin.
I can only agree with the other comments that the loco runs and sounds an absolute treat. Perhaps even more impressive when you explain the hand work involved in the conversion. Do Gibson not supply a 3 mm axle wheel that is suitable?
With decent track, this again calls into question the need for kit built chassis with compensated or sprung suspension.
Dave.

Not in his listings unless the 5'3" Ivatt wheels (16sp) would do. The 3F/4F wheels have 2.5 mm axles.

Bachmann 1P drivers. This is a spare set I purchased from Bachmann. Note the square brass bearings.

Alan Gibson drivers with rebored bearings and gear wheel. Note the added washers. Also there are only two 1mm washers in this picture. I added a 0.5mm washer to each side to limit side movement especially at the front due to the limited space across the footplate and splashers.

Photo shows metal removed on the body to give extra clearance for the driving wheels. Not shown is the additional work required on the small splasher to give clearance for the crankpin nut. Please be very careful when removing metal from the body - remove a bit and check - repeat

Trailing bogie plus chassis with AG wheels in position.

The following three photos are of the underside of the finished conversion showing the wheels and washers plus the position of my AJs.
Pickups need to be moved out to make contact.
Please note the brake shoes have been repositioned. I have achieved this by adding a small piece of 2mm square plasticard behind the shoe. I drilled 0.5mm holes in the shoe/plasticard and bracket off the keeper plate a superglued it together. These can be made out in the photos. The brake connecting rod is metal and I filed some metal off the rear to give clearance for the crankpin nuts.

Keith/ Dave,

Alan Gibson do not do a 3mm conversion for this model.

I purchased Driving wheels 5ft 2.5in diameter 16 spoke Ref 4862 S4 from Colin. These are the standard wheel for the 4F and 3F ex Midland/LMS engines and come with an 1/8in axle.

The trailing bogie wheels are :- 3ftdiameter 10 spoke Ref 4836 S4

Hope this helps,

Robin

Just realised that Ultrascale do wheels with 3mm axles and that includes the 5ft 3in wheel for a 4F. Nickel silver or (heaven forbid) brass for P4 but also steel for EM or 00 for this wheel only it seems so, as I work in EM, I know what I'll be ordering! Unfortunately bogie wheels are not available in steel so I'll get them from Alan Gibson.

Robin,
Excellent work and shows the benefits of converting RTR locos.
I can confirm that reaming out the bearings from 3mm to 1/8” should be done very carefully and slowly as when I converted a Bachmann Coal Tank I managed to destroy one of the bearings. Part of the problem was griping the bearing too tightly which resulted in me crushing the bearing.

What services in the Bristol area did the 0-4-4 tanks work and at what period?

Your stud of sound chipped locomotives is getting larger by the minute!

David, The last Johnson 1P tanks allocated to Barrow Road were 58079 and 58080 around 1950. The shed had a large allocation in the 1930's and operated the Bath Green Park locals to Bristol Temple Meads and also the single platform ex Midland Station at St.Philips. There was also a service from Clifton to Fishponds.
I just like the look of them and as Bachmann chose 58072, one of the last to survive in service until 1956, and which was allocated to Highbridge on the S&D it seemed an appropriate model to buy. I think the Bachmann model is one of the best rtr models I have seen.

Just for info, according to the Ian Allan 1959 Locoshed book, the very last two Johnson 1P 0-4-4 tanks were 58065 at Lincoln (reporting date 11/4/59) and 58086 at Bath Green Park [which probably means at its Highbridge sub-shed] (reporting date 21/3/59).

The photographic record provided by Messrs Peters and Lockett suggests that from around 1950 Bath's allocation of Ivatt 2-6-2Ts supplanted other forms of motive power on most of the Bath-Bristol via Mangotsfield passenger workings. The S&D' s Evercreech Jc-Burnham-on-Sea Branch was one of the last strongholds of Johnson's bogie tank engines, including 58072. Handwritten tables in my possession indicate that 58072 was allocated to Highbridge on 23 February 1952 and remained there until storage on 30 September 1955, withdrawal being noted as taking place 'WE 27/10/56' - more than a year later! Actually, the allocation date may be in error, as the 22E Society photographed 58072 in immaculate condition on shed at Highbridge on 3 February 1952.

In late April 1955 Bath suffered a shortage of tank engine motive power, and 58072 was drafted in from Highbridge for a spell, primarily to cover the 6/5 Bath-Binegar (SX) service. On the last Saturday of her stay at Bath (14 May 1955) 58072 was allocated to the 12/20 service to Bristol 'for a bit of fun,' as the shed foreman put it, and was specially cleaned up for the occasion. So Robin's video can be taken as an entirely accurate depiction of the event save for the composition of the train, for which an ex-LSW gangwayed 3-set should take the place of that rather tasty lavatory third brake.

58086 seems to have last seen active service on the Branch between Evercreech and Highbridge, shedded at the latter location, but spent an extended period of storage out of use on 7 road at Bath shed prior to official withdrawal.
