Another Bachmann Jubilee Converted to P4

Postby barrowroad » Mon May 18, 2020 3:29 pm

My latest conversion is 45611 Hong Kong which is for David Clarke. This is my 4th Jubilee conversion, three for myself plus a Patriot [ which has the same chassis]. Conversion follows my now standard method using the Alan Gibson 3mm axle conversion set and Markits crankpins, which allows me to reuse all of the Bachmann motion including coupling and connecting rods. The tender chassis is a Dave Franks Stanier unit and extra detailing has been added.

This is the first run of the loco following the addition of it's decoder having been tested using dc.

Looks good! How do you arrange the return crank?

Robin,
Excellent work, runs well with a decent load. I just need to weather it when I get it back.
This again reinforces how good RTR chassis are these days. When we next visit we can populate the shed yard with a decent number of appropriate ( Eire, Hong Kong, Bengal, Kempenfelt) Jubilees. Hong Kong was a Nottingham loco for many years before going to Burton, before ending its days at Derby where it was allocated for 18 months so would have been seen at Bristol.

Phil the return is a modified Markits crank.

Quite expensive at £9.50 especially when I discard the crank.

I file off the hexagonal section at the top of the crank pin and mark a line across the centre.

and then cut a slot using a fret saw and slotting file. The slot depth is 0.5mm and width 0.5mm.

The Markits crank is 2.58mm in diameter whilst the Bachmann is only 2.36mm so you will need to file the top 0.5mm to the latter diameter.
EDIT. I have found this is not necessary on some of them.

This slot will fit the lugs on the back of the existing Bachmann Jubilee crank. Provided you orientate the slot correctly the crank can be refitted in to correct position and orientation.

EDIT I also drill a hole in the base of the Markits crankpin into the plastic centre boss of the Gibson wheel - 0.45mm or 0.6mm - once in correct orientation, in order to fix the crankpin in the correct postion.

Just one further point I forgot to mention the thread on the Markits crankpin is M1.4 so you cannot reuse the Bachmann screw.
I sourced some as follows. The head needs turning down to 2mm diameter and the thread length to 1.5mm.

Can you not use the Markits screw that held their crank on?

Another way forward for return cranks can be found here: https://www.scalefour.org/members/newsa ... S4-149.pdf. Dave Booth converted a Bachmann WD and outlined the procedure in S4 news issue 149 (2006) on page 11. The only catch is that it requires a lathe or access to one along with some rather small taps.

Cheers,

David
