Marshlink Area Group Meeting 16th March 2023
7 members met at the usual venue. Robin Marsh and David Lowe had reported in sick while Ian Moon and Steve Lawrence were otherwise engaged.
Steve Carter brought a diagram of a track plan for his home layout and was keen to get the thoughts of the group on the signalling plan. This led to an interesting discussion about the options for signalling the loop and entry to the goods sidings.
James Walters then talked about his experience with the Templot facility for printing/ laser cutting track. He brought along an example. He is planning to use the system for producing the track for his model of Bexhill West, cutting whole sections in one go, having tested the clearances around the 3 platforms on the Templot model. Not all track formations are available yet but are under development.
James the presented a Templot diagram of a junction as a possible model for the groups hub in the modular system discussed last month. The plan was agreed and James will develop it into a full size print for our next meeting.
Brian Smith brought along a couple of LMS suburban coaches built from the ratio kits and beautifully painted and lined. Currently in OO gauge, Brian wanted to know where to get bogies to allow them to be converted to P4. The consensus of opinion was to first put P4 wheelsets into the existing bogies and add some weight to the models before moving to different bogies. Recommendations for both Wizard models and Branchlines wheels were given. Brian also mentioned converting the Heljan railcar to P4. Steve Carter was able to point Brian to an article on this on the Scalefour forum.
While on the subject of coaches, Roger Barron produced two examples of bogies he has built from Rhymney models kits. These provide springing to the bolster and to the wheels themselves and look impressive. Roger pointed out that the bolster springing system was fiddly to build and he was still trying to get the spring in place on one of the bogies. The two were built to fit under an LNER 52’6” brake third he has built from an RDEB kit which he also showed.
As always thanks to Steve Carter for refreshments.
