Marshlink Area Group Meeting 20th October 2022

8 members and 1 guest met at St Mary’s church hall in Rye. Ian Moon was unavailable.
We welcomed Roger Barron who had made the journey from Folkestone to see what the group was about. We hope he will become a regular, despite the distance.
Brian Smith opened the evening by discussing the techniques he had used to portray an estuary on his layout. After extensive research and some trial and error he had found that industrial hand drying paper, combined with multiple layers of glue, paint and varnish made the most realistic estuary water. He showed some photographs of the results, which were admired by all.
He has also started using static grass on the layout. Steve Carter mentioned he has some experience in this field and can offer advice.

James Walters had been demonstrating ‘Starting in P4’ at Scaleforum. There was much interest in his experience from other members of the group, many of whom had visited the show. James thoroughly enjoyed his 2 days. He had many visitors to the stand making lots of friends and contacts amongst fellow demonstrators and visitors. He was even asked to provide copies of items he had made to visting modellers.
All members of the group who visited Scaleforum agreed that it was a very good show in a pleasant venue. Special mention was made of the catering which was given top marks.

Bob Cummings, who had missed our previous discussions on loco suspension, demonstrated the tools and techniques he had been using for 60 years. This involves a set of extended axle rods set on machined blocks to set the coupling rods and filing the bearing holes in the chassis frames to give some vertical movement for standard compensation. Bob displayed an LBSCR tank loco built in this way.

Robin Marsh presented his ‘completed’ 2 road GWR kit built engine shed. Having built it to specification he has since realised that the entry to the shed, with the doors on but open, is too narrow on one of the roads to allow a loco to enter! After much discussion and examination of the model it was agreed that this was down to a manufacturing error. A number of options were discussed to resolve the issue. Robin will consider and report back.

Greg Coady raised the topic of coach bogies, what others used and which they preferred. He has used all sorts on his stock including sprung, compensated and fixed but is always looking for options. The general consensus was that the MJT, Brassmasters and Bill Bedford types all do a good job.

Ben Mason produced a scale drawing of Cliffe station on the ‘Hundred of Hoo’ line which was operated by the SER. Ben plans to build a layout around this location. Ben, David Lowe and Roger Barron all joined in a discussion on the project with David agreeing to produce the windows for the model on his 3D printer.

Next meeting is 17th November.
