Marshlink Area Group Meeting 18th August 2022
Due to our usual venue in Rye being unavailable during the town’s art festival, 6 members met at Greg Coady’s house in Dymchurch. Ian Moon, Brian Smith and Bob Cummings were unavailable, the last due to a car breakdown on the way!
James Walters brought the prototype model of an interlocking frame he had built to help him understand how a full size frame would work on his planned model of Bexhill West. For those members unfamiliar with mechanical interlocking it provided a useful guide to the principles involved.
Enthused by a picture of New Romney station in its heyday with several hundred sheep seemingly running loose on the platform, Ben Mason wondered what the most cost effective way of producing the requisite number of animals might be. 3D printing is one option he will explore.
Robin Marsh brought along a part built model of a ‘Timber Tracks’ engine shed he has enjoyed building. Having previously built a goods shed from the same supplier his only disappointment has been that the instructions for the engine shed are significantly less helpful and he seems to have a number of extra pieces which are not referenced. Nevertheless it is going to be a fine model when completed.
James brought along the body of an SE&CR ‘H’ class 0-4-4 tank, his first whitemetal build from an SE Finecast kit. He is debating how to build the chassis and what springing, compensation system to use. Some examples of different springing systems were demonstrated using either ‘High Level’ or ‘Brassmasters’ hornblocks. Ben had also brought along completed builds of both the ‘H’ and ‘C’ class locos, again from SEF kits.
To enhance the character of his own layout Steve Carter has been looking at adding an East Sussex type finger post. This type has/had a unique geometry and to see how it could be 3D printed he enlisted the help of David Lowe who knows a thing or two about ‘Fusion 360’.
David then talked about the challenges involved.
Steve had brought along a couple of books he has acquired. One on weathering stock by George Dent and the second on Small Layout Design from the Wild Swan label.
He also mentioned that tickets for Scaleforum are now on sale on the website.
The next meeting will be held at the normal venue on Thursday 15th September when ‘lining’ and local scalefour activities will be on the agenda.
