July 2022 Meeting

Postby GregC » Fri Jul 22, 2022 2:02 pm

Marshlink Area Group Meeting 21st July 2022

7 members attended at the usual meeting place,St Mary’s church centre in Rye.

Bob Cummings and Ian Moon were otherwise engaged while Bob Cockcroft is now domiciled in France. All were unable to attend.

The meeting started with David Lowe talking about the steps he was taking towards his objective of building a model of Ashburton in the period prior to the first world war in 7mm. Having acquired a kit for a GWR 2021 saddle tank he had decided to machine the wheels from cast iron blanks and he described and passed round the various jigs he had and was constructing to ensure a successful outcome to this project. Having set out on this path, he related how ‘Sod’s law’ intervened and a finished set of wheels became available and was obtained. However he will continue to work on the blank set once he has determined how to position the form tool on the tool holder of his lathe.
His second challenge on this project relates to trackwork as it seems that in the period he wants to model, Ashburton was laid with baulk road track. Components for such can be obtained from the Broad Gauge Society but the instructions for making pointwork are a little vague. Both Steve and Greg suggested speaking to Paul Townsend and Steve will pass on call Paul’s contact detail to David.

Ben Mason presented a couple of SECR coaches he had built and had a question on the panel lining, in particular the shape of such at the corners. Both James and Greg suggested the person to speak to was John Arkell the membership secretary of the SECR society. James will give Ben John’s contact details and Greg will look through the SECR’s intranet based modelling magazine for help.

Greg Coady then discussed a problem he was having with home made transfers for a pair of GWR fish vans. Having poduced the waterslide transers on his inkjet printer he had found that the ink density was insufficient to render the transfer visible. Both Steve Carter and Brian Smith made good suggestions on how to improve the ink density which Greg will now try.

James Walters then talked about using pad printing as an alternative option to transfers. He has the necessary equipment to try this approach for his layout.

Greg also asked if anyone had experience of spraying using acrylics through an airbrush as he had been experimenting on a couple of wagons. Steve had used them for weathering but as a wash with a very thin mix. David has used them and advised to use the specific thinners rather than water to dilute the mix. Greg will visit David to pursue further

Robin Marsh had brought along a pair of GWR Mica vans built from David Geen whitemetal kits and a GWR ‘Bloater’ fish van from a Parkside kit with a Mike Clark ‘Masokits’ underframe.

Steve then gave an update on the forthcoming Scaleforum which is likely to be hosting a large and interesting range of traders and layouts.

Apologies are due to James Walters as we didn’t get round to discussing his lever frame interlocking module.

Steve once again provided biscuits and refreshments. Thank you.

Next meeting is 18th August.
