June Meeting

Postby GregC » Mon Jun 20, 2022 2:45 pm

Marshlink Area Group Meeting 16th June 2022.

5 members and 1 guest attended the latest group meeting at the St Mary's church centre in Rye during the first heatwave of the year.
Steve Carter, James Walters, Ian Moon, Brian Smith and Bob Cockcroft were unable to attend and sent apologies.

Our guest for the evening was Andrew Green from south east London who has an interest in modelling the old SECR station at Dungeness.
He had visited the site and was interested to gather opinions on the playability of what was a fairly restricted layout. He does however like shingle and lighthouses both of which feature heavily at Dungeness.
He received plenty of advice from the resident SECR experts in the group and Robin Marsh, in particular, emphasised how much he had learned from just building his first layout.

Ben Mason had brought along a templot print of his proposed shunting yard. Building of which is dependent on the timing of his imminent house move. He also showed the group his model of an Adams LSWR 380 class 4-4-0. This, he assured us, runs very well going forward but was not guaranteed to perform as well running in reverse. Various suggestions were forthcoming as to how to solve any issues with such, several concerning turntables. Ben later also demonstrated a neat servo operated signal control powered by battery.

David Lowe showed his latest 3D printed creations. These are GWR grease axleboxes in 7mm. The level of detail in what is a relatively plain item is superb. David explained that he still needs to improve the design to clear the axle holes completely.

Bob Cummings, having purchased the forming tool from the society stores, has been busy turning coach wheels to P4 standards from proprietary 00 gauge wheels. To do so he has engineered a pair of jigs to hold the wheels securely which he brought along to show.

Greg Coady showed his now completed GWR 39xx 2-6-2 tank loco. The real things were built 1907-1908 as stopgaps to provide fast suburban services out of Birmingham. This model is to run on the Farnham MRC's Brixcombe layout (obviously on a running in turn) and had been tested the previous day on a test session. Featuring CSB compensation and independently sprung and centre controlled pony trucks the loco had performed faultlessly. Much to Gregs relief!

In Steves absence rereshments and biscuits were provided by Ben and Greg.

The second half of the meeting was taken up with discussion on Scalefour Society Exhibitions and what the group might do locally to promote the society. Details of this will be placed on the forum in due course.

Next meeting is 21st July.

I would be interested in seeing how he did this, can he or someone in your group give details please?

Thank you for the update Greg, and I’m sorry I couldn’t be with you. I too am interested in Bob’s wheel turning jig and look forward to discussing these with him in due course.

Best wishes,

James
