Hi Steve
Thanks for the comment and the question.
With regards to the solebars:-

Do they have separate overlays?
If so what thickness do you use for the overlays?
Is the river detail etched or punched from behind?
If punched from behind may I ask what tool do you use to get such consistency?

Here is a picture of the underframe etch. It shows that the solebar is a fold up with a half etched insert so that the rivets are uniform in height and width.
IMG_3178.JPG

It's etched in 12 thou nickel silver so that the half etch is 6 thou.
The solebar steps when folded up need the rivets pushing through from the back, I use a GW Models riveter but have since made new tools to fit it with different points and angles to the 45 degree pin point supplied and use the Limiter to keep the same depth.
I must admit that depending where the rivets are I sometimes just push them out with a scriber.

Looking forward to the point when one can order this just like the Iron Mink.

Any thoughts on likely pricing yet for the underframe kit complete with castings etc for the powered bogie?

Hi Ken
Thanks for the Question.

Sorry Not as yet. Not finished the Castings still need to make the Bogie axlebox and springs.

Although things are getting closer, I have been re looking at the mounting bars and trying to get more rotation. This I have done by drawing up an etch which folds up into the two bars connected together with a central pivot then that can be screwed to a plate on the chassis giving the impression of fitted to the chassis mounts.
First test etch showing 3 units OO EM and S4 spacing.
IMG_3182.JPG

Plate fitted to the underneath of the chassis by the four screws as if mounted to the beams. A shouldered 8ba nut soldered through the central hole. The beam unit also slots over the nut so that the screw can be done up tight while still giving free rotation.
IMG_3183.JPG

IMG_3184.JPG

Chassis fitted to the underframe the screw can be just seen between the beams.

Hello Jeremy.

I may already have asked you this, but in case I haven't, would you put me down for one of these please when it is available?

It looks very good.

Thanks - John

Exquisite work, Sir!

Bang me down for a pair. (for the future, when I can solder at the subatomic level!)

Hi Jeremy,

The un-powered bogie looks like a fishbelly, will you be making them available as a seperate item? I had a pair pencilled in with Chris Parrish, who has sadly passed away.

This post is specially for Phil.

I have redrawn the Fishbelly Bogie to a 9' wheelbase and test etched it.
IMG_3186.JPG

I spent the evening putting it together, a few minor errors but has gone together well. I will start writing the instructions on a new thread later this week.
IMG_3209.JPG

All those interested in the Railmotor chassis I am hoping to send a final production etch to the etchers this week and start doing the instructions on a separate thread the Valve gear etch still needs to be finalised so hopefully try and get that done in the next few weeks

I'll definitely have two. Might even extend to a third, to put the etch in a picture frame and hang it on the wall.
That would be an ecumenical matter.

I would be interested in two - to build.

this is for the 59 foot Diagram Q railmotor if I remember the start of the thread.

I will be interested in two 70 foot version if you do those too!

The A3 and A4 have started, as has the Collett Goods.
That would be an ecumenical matter.

The Casting Patterns for the Underframe, Chassis and Bogie of the Diagram Q Railmotor are now all done and gone for casting tonight.

IMG_3239.JPG

It was the bogie springs and axleboxes holding this stage up So when Tony Montgomery mentioned he would be mould making this week I finished them off unfortunately they only fit the 8 foot Fishbelly, the 9 foot version springs are 2mm longer so will have to make another set.
IMG_3240.JPG

I have made enough of each so that one spin makes I Unit without sub mastering.

Received this morning the castings for the Railmotor and very pleased with them. Thanks Tony you have done a good job with them.
The gas tanks have a slot milled in them to position them on the fold down bracket on the underframe. Then the straps can be wrapped round to hold in place. The Buffers will need drilling out for the heads and I think the Vacuum Cylinder will need some of the base filing off to move it closer to the body.

IMG_3270.JPG

I have stuck the Sand Boxes on with double sided tape and placed the Cylinder tops on for now just to see how they fit and slotted the boiler base in which has a washout plug in.

This is looking excellent and I'm just working out how many I need (or can afford) to get my Blacksmith models working a treat.

Just had produced a production tool for the Chassis etch and run once.

IMG_4360.JPG

I now need to build one up to check it, and write the instructions. Then have the Valve Gear etch double checked before I get a production tool done.

This is looking so good I cannot wait to order at least two to get my Steam Railmotors brought up to 21st century standard from the mid 70's or 80's of the 20th century.

I don't know how much encouragement you need Jeremy but I'm behind you all the way!

I am another who must say "me too" I have a Mallard 59' kit to modernize and a Kemilway 70' etch to equip - so I will be interested in the 70' version as well if that is on the radar.

Jeremy,
Reviewing the Blacksmith(nee Mallard) body etch,
Mallard_Etch.jpg
and the method of attaching coach ends via fold down tabs with holes for buffers
Part_Fig_2.jpg

& noting that your underframe incorporates it's own buffer beam, would a solution be for me to fold the tabs up instead of down, and crop the bottom of the coach end?
Also before I start removing parts from the etch I suppose it would make sense to wait for the arrival of your chassis kit, so that fixing holes in the body floor can be drilled to coincide with your fixing holes.
In the meantime I shall be patient & start making a list of the extra parts required to complete the body.
Wheels, gas lamp tops, shell vents ( I assume short)...
Steve

Hi Steve
Some interesting questions you have made.
At The moment I am about to release the Railmotor chassis kit only. So don't do any thing to your body etch.
I will be releasing an undeframe and body kit later. Possibly as seperate kits but not sure yet the Underframe and Bogie etches are now almost complete, and I am midway through drawing the body.
